ASB Classic Final

Cameron Norrie vs Tennys Sandgren

Cameron Norrie faces Tennys Sandgren in the final of the ASB Classic.

Brit Cameron Norrie reached his first ATP final after defeating Jan Lennard Struff in three sets in Auckland. The 23-year-old won 7-5 4-6 6-3 in the city where he grew up. He had lost his three previous Tour semi-finals but he held his nerve this time to come through in three sets. He beat Taylor Fritz, who he faces in the first round of the Australian Open, in the quarter-finals in straight sets.

Norrie overcame Joao Sousa 7-6 6-4 to reach the last eight. The world No.93 saved all six breakpoints he faced and converted his first and only break point of the match. Norrie began his season in style when he defeated mercurial Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets. The Auckland born 23-year-old took just 58 minutes to win the match against Paire, who is ranked 38 places above him. He saved all four break points he faced and won 79% of his first-serve points, breaking once in the first set and twice in the second. Norrie broke into the top 100 last season and reached two ATP tour semi-finals.

Tennys Sandgren thrashed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4 6-2 to reach his second ATP singles final. The American won comfortably in a one-sided contest and will be hoping to win his first ever ATP title on Saturday. Sandgren is yet to drop a set in Auckland: beating Maximilian Marterer, Marco Cecchinato and Leonardo Mayer before demolishing Kohlschreiber. He reached the quarter-finals of last year’s Australian Open.

This could be a nervy final with both players yet to win a title. Norrie leads the head-to-head 4-2 and has won their last three meetings, albeit in lower-ranked challengers. The Brit has won six of their last seven sets and 2-0 Norrie offers value at 7/4.
