Cheltenham Festival 2019: Biggest winners from day one

Cheltenham Festival 2019: Biggest winners from day one

Expected level of drama in the opening day of Cheltenham

Both fans of horse racing and those who are tempted in taking a punt on all major sporting events are given a good reason to be cheerful this week, as Cheltenham Festival 2019 kicked off in exciting style.

The opening race saw an impressively dominant win by Klassical Dream at a 5/1 starting price, followed by Duc Des Genievres winning The Arkle at the same price.

A more competitive Ultima Handicap Chase saw Beware The Bear winning at 10/1, and a three-way fight between Laurina, Apple’s Jade and Buveur D’Air in the Champion Hurdle was put on its head when Buveur D’Air fell, leaving 16/1 Espoir D’Allen with an opportunity to clinch first.

It was clear to see that the biggest shock of Cheltenham Festival 2019 Day One came in the Mares’ Hurdle, where distinct favourite Benie Des Dieux fell at the final hurdle, allowing 10/1 Roksana to win the race ahead of him. Benie Des Dieux was the shortest priced horse of the day, given odds of 10/11, putting some uncertainty into the minds of those looking to back favourites over the remaining four days of the festival.

Finishing off the day, A Plus Tard won the Novices Handicap Chase at 5/1, and Le Breuil won the National Hunt Challenge Cup at 14/1.

An even mix of shocks and expected wins made it difficult for a lot of punters to claim any winning bets over day one, but there were some absolutely sensational wins sent over to us on Twitter and Facebook. We’ve included our favourites below, with hopes that there’s more to come over the remaining four days.

Over £14,000 at stake in a Cheltenham Festival Lucky 15

Picking the winning horse in a festival as hotly-contested as Cheltenham is almost entirely impossible, but managing to pinpoint four winners from the seven races which took place over day one is something you’d only expect to see from someone with a fully-functioning time machine.

It’s not even as if this unnamed bettor simply backed every single favourite, as they went from opting to back two shorter priced horses in the opening two races, to backing two larger priced options in the third and fourth races of the day.

Overall horse racing odds for this bet were estimated at 9,179/1, offering potential winnings of £14,111 if all four horses went on to win. The cash out at the time we received the betslip was set at £1,216.47 after the first three horses won their respective races, but there’s been no update over how the rest of the bet fared.

One concern is that this punter cashed out before the final race in the bet, meaning that they took slightly over £1,200 as opposed to the £14,000 they would have claimed if they’d waited, but we can only hope that they held their nerve to seal what has to be the best bet of Cheltenham Festival 2019 so far.

Lucky 15 Cheltenham Festival Bet

Predicting the exact outcome of the Ultima Handicap Chase

Once again referring to the magic ball that was clearly used by the punter who picked a winning 9,179/1 Lucky 15 bet, this punter was able to predict the future in an arguably more impressive way, foreseeing exactly the finishing order of the Ultima Handicap Chase.

Backing Beware The Bear to win the race came with odds of 10/1 by itself, so correctly identifying Vintage Clouds at second place and Lake View Lad at third was enough to award this punter with £2,250.99 from a £3 stake.

A handful of bookmakers offer this market on most major race meetings, but it’s usually used as a way to determine the winner and a horse that could place; working out the three horses who finished in the top three positions either takes a lot of expertise in betting on horse racing, or an even larger dose of luck.
