Masters 2018 Betting Preview

The first major tournament in the golfing calendar gets underway next Thursday as golfing’s elite return to Augusta for the Masters in hunt for the illustrious green jacket. Excitement in the golfing world is at its peak as the list of contenders for the title seems longer than ever. The emergence of new talent and the return of old reliables including a certain 14 time major winner, the race for the green jacket is as open as it ever has been. Here’s our top picks for Augusta.

Jordan Spieth – 9/1

The 2015 champion Jordan Spieth looks to win the coveted green jacket for the second time in his career where he’s been massively successful in his four trips to Augusta.  The win in 2015 was sandwiched by runners up spots in both 2014 and 2016. In fact last year was Spieth’s worst in his four trips to Georgia finishing in tied 11th.  However Spieth hasn’t won a tournament since the Open back in July and has had some issues since the turn of the year.  He’s been struggling with his putting all season long and currently ranks 169th in strokes gained in putting. He’s also coming off a tied 17th place finish in the Mexico World Golf Championships and a missed cut in the Valspar Championships. Spieth however is never someone to write off as the American has lead an unbelievable 8 of his 16 rounds in Augusta so it wouldn’t be a surprise if everything fell in to place for the world number 4 next week. He also most recently finished tied 3rd in Houston on Sunday which stands him in good stead coming into this major.

Tiger Woods – 14/1

The 14 time major winner seems to be picking up form right in time for the trip to Augusta. The 42 year old is set to enter his 19th Masters and looks to be right back on his game. He’s competed for two titles already this year, finishing just one shot off Paul Casey in the Valspar Championships and was 5th in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in his last two tournaments making it 10 rounds in a row in which Tiger has hit an under par round. Wood’s looks to have recovered from his recent injury struggles, including his spinal fusion surgery where some were questioning him even returning to the sport, but golf’s favourite son is back at Augusta for the first time since 2015. With a potential 5th green jacket on the line Tiger has the best chance in years to win his first major in 10 years and to end his five year winless run.

Phil Mickelson – 16/1

The three time green jacket winner is always someone to watch out for when coming into the Masters. Mickelson ended a winless run that had stretched back to the 2013 Open with a playoff win at the WGC-Mexico Championship against Justin Thomas in March and will be desperate to regain the green jacket that he last won in 2010. Mickelson however has had a lot of problems with majors as of late. In 2017 he missed the cut in two of the three majors that he played in and shot two rounds over par at last years Masters to finish a disappointing 22nd. Despite that, ‘lefty’ is coming off of a good start to 2018 with 5 top 10 finishes plus the win in Mexico already this calendar year so looks to have got his game going as we enter the first major of the year. At 47 years of age can Mickelson win a third green jacket to become the oldest ever Masters winner.

Alexander Noren – 35/1

Alexander Noren comes into the Masters being competitive in nearly every single tournament that he’s played in this calendar year. Noren narrowly missed out on the match play final and lost a playoff in the Farmers Insurance Open and also contended for the win in Florida. Noren hasn’t missed the cut in any of his 8 events so far in 2018 so looks a good bet to at least make it into the final day.  Noren however plays pretty much everything at left to right which is always a problem at Augusta. Noren has only had one Masters tournament and only shot a 74 and a 78 before missing the cut for weekend sessions. The Swede has dedicated himself to the US this season and looks set to improve massively in Augusta this time round. Could Augusta be the place where everything falls into place for the Swede.

Justin Rose – 12/1

After finishing as runner up last year Justin Rose looks to go one better at Augusta this time out. After narrowly missing out to Sergio Garcia, Rose’s form dipped but he’s managed to pick himself up and is now playing some of the best golf of his career. It’s Rose’ 13th Masters but he’s still yet to win that green jacket that he so desperately wants. Despite not winning the tournament before though Rose has a good record at Augusta, never finishing outside of the top 40 and has six top 10 finishes to his name. Rose is coming off of good form too with consecutive top five finishes in the Arnold Palmer and the Valspar championships and hasn’t missed a cut so far in 2018.  Can Rose finally clinch the green jacket next week in Augusta or will he just miss out once again.

Oddschanger’s Outright Bet – Phil Mickelson EW

Although we do like the look of any of the above players to go on and win the tournament, we’ve put our money on Phil Mickelson EW this year. This is mainly due to the fact that he has been in some of the best form of all of the players on tour and has won the tournament twice in the past too. Also if he was to win this year, it would make him the oldest ever Masters winner at 47 years old, which of course, would be a special achievement.

If you fancy him, back him with SkyBet & get 10 places.
