Who will replace Daniel Craig as 007 after Bond 25?

Although he once said that he’d rather ‘take his own life’ than return as James Bond following 2015’s underwhelming offering Spectre, Daniel Craig confirmed that he would return as 007 for one last time, with Sam Mendes set to direct his third James Bond film.

Bookmakers have been following who could replace Daniel Craig in the role, pricing up a set of next James Bond odds on a practically endless list of names from the world of entertainment. There’s already been enough of an indication over who could be pushing for the role based on current next Bond odds, but with so many actors interested in playing Bond, we could see a shock when an official announcement is made.

Odds hinting at a two-way battle between Tom Hiddleston and Cillian Murphy

Past links with Michael Fassbender, Kit Harrington, Idris Elba and many others continue to hold a price on bookmaker websites, but it’s been Tom Hiddleston and Cillian Murphy who’ve been in contention for the role since day one, looking likely that either of the actors will eventually be awarded with it.

Best-known for playing Loki in several of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Tom Hiddleston primarily proved his capability as James Bond after his Golden Globe winning performance in 2016 thriller The Night Manager.

It’s easy to assume that the 9/4 price on Sky Bet that puts Tom Hiddleston down as favourite to become next James Bond is due to his role in the show, especially after convincingly portraying a former soldier and undercover agent.

A whole four years older than Tom Hiddleston, Cillian Murphy has steadily moved into the frame, currently second favourite at odds of 5/2 on Sky Bet but also spending some time with a shorter price than Hiddleston. Notable for roles in 28 Days Later, Batman Begins, Sunshine, Inception and Dunkirk, Cillian Murphy became an even more memorable face through his starring role in Peaky Blinders.

No espionage roles geared him up for the prospect of playing James Bond like we’ve seen with Tom Hiddleston, but his experience has shown flexibility in the sorts of roles he can play.

Cillian Murphy James Bond

The next James Bond is expected to be between Tom Hiddleston and Cillian Murphy, with both actors moving into favourite over past weeks.

Hundreds of candidates priced up to become next James Bond

A stellar performance in political BBC drama Bodyguard put Richard Madden down as third favourite at 7/2, and Idris Elba has always been involved in the next James Bond actor odds, priced at 4/1 after a somewhat James Bond-like performance in BBC crime drama Luther.

Before reaching odds as high as 10/1, James Norton is given a 9/2 price through his role in crime series McMafia, Tom Hardy is priced at 5/1 due to ranking as one of the UK’s best acting talents, and Damian Lewis comes in at 6/1 to provide an option that is at a similar age to Daniel Craig.

An estimated seventy famous names are given a price to become next James Bond, with most of these options being priced above the 100/1 mark, proving how absurd some of the less likely suggestions get.

Poldark star Aidan Turner and superman actor Henry Cavill are priced at 12/1, followed by a surprisingly short 14/1 price for Oscar winner Rami Malek, who would be more likely to be handed the role if it wasn’t for him being rumoured as the Bond 25 villain.

Another successful export, Jack Huston burst onto the scene with his role in Boardwalk Empire, given odds of 25/1 to match the price handed to former favourable option Michael Fassbender, who is one of the more experienced names in the category. After this point, odds move above 25/1, including some that could see a reduction in future weeks and others that appear to be immensely unlikely to stand a chance of being given the role.

Daniel Craig will have played James Bond for a fifth time when he leaves the role after Bond 25.
