Bookmakers release odds on the highest grossing movie of 2019 at the UK Box Office

It might not be something that you’d typically consider putting money on, but Betway have chosen to make it possible to bet on the highest grossing movie of 2019. Film fanatics across the country are excited by a selection of this year’s biggest films, and the box office odds are already reflecting which films are likely to be the most popular.

Avengers: Endgame at 11/8

Clear favourite to top this year’s UK Box Office ratings is Avengers 4, where we’re expecting a lot of shocks in what could end up being the final film of the franchise. Avengers: Infinity War finished with half of the population of the universe literally turning to dust, so there’s a lot of questions to be answered and even more worries over how the next film could end.

Excitement has continued to build through the release of each Avengers: Endgame trailer, as well as rumours over the official Avengers: Endgame release date in the UK, leaving no reason as to why it’s already seen as the film expected of making the most money at the box office.

Star Wars: Episode IX at 6/4

Only marginally behind Avengers: Endgame in the highest grossing movie of 2019 odds, the next Star Wars film has had a lot of mixed views from fans of the previous films following a varied reaction to Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017.

There’s no denying the immense popularity of the Star Wars saga – both old and new – as it’s harnessed the attention of people across the world since the first film was released in 1977. The Last Jedi was written and directed by Rian Johnson, who was best known for directing Looper and a handful of episodes of Breaking Bad. The next instalment sees J.J. Abrams returning as director after criticism of the last film, with hopes that there’ll be more of the exciting themes seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Marvel Avengers: Endgame

Iron Man or Captain America are expected to die in Avengers: Endgame, making it even more important that fans see it as soon as it’s released.

Toy Story 4 at 5/1

With a far larger gap between this and both Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: Episode IX, Toy Story 4 will be an attractive prospect to a lot of punters choosing to bet on this market. It holds a nostalgia factor that’s likely to pull a lot of people into cinemas this summer, with it being enough to potentially leapfrog all other films in the UK Box Office this year.

It was originally assumed that Toy Story 3 would be the final film in the series, but an announcement several years ago said otherwise. Both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are set to return with most of the original cast, as well as the addition of Keanu Reeves, comedy duo Key and Peele, and Disney Pixar legend John Ratzenburger.

The Lion King at 11/2

Holding similar values to Toy Story 4, The Lion King possesses a nostalgic undercurrent, but without a link as close as the one Toy Story has with its audience. Live-action remakes have already been seen with other Walt Disney classics including The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, 101 Dalmatians, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella, but with The Lion King arguably held even closer to the hearts of its audience, it could trump the lot.

Other upcoming live-action Disney remakes include Dumbo, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lilo & Stitch, and The Little Mermaid, but with all of Dumbo, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp, and Mulan also set for a 2019 release, The Lion King’s main issue could be having to battle it out with other releases from Disney.

Frozen 2 at 8/1

It rarely takes long to see another Disney film mentioned, and that’s exactly the case with Frozen 2, following closely behind both Toy Story 4 and The Lion King, but also linked to all of the films already listed, as Star Wars and Marvel are under the ownership of The Walt Disney Company.

UK Box Office odds on Frozen 2 could potentially drop over future days due to the fact that an official trailer was released this week. Fans are likely to be extremely excited to see how Frozen 2 fares, but it’s unlikely to rate anywhere near the buzz around Toy Story 4 and The Lion King based on sentimentality alone.

Buzz Lightyear Toy Story 4

A short clip of Toy Story 4 was played in one of the Super Bowl 53 breaks, teasing fans of the first three films.

The five current favourites in the Highest Grossing Movie of 2019 market share a similar theme of being in some way affiliated with The Walt Disney Company, but we see another trend in almost all of the other six films in the list.

Sitting with odds of 20/1, Wonder Woman 1984 comes after Frozen 2, then followed by Spider-Man Far From Home at 22/1. Captain Marvel is priced at 33/1 and Shazam! surprisingly features on the list at 50/1, with all of these films being under the superhero genre, presenting the usual trend for comic book films pulling in most of the customers at cinemas each year.

Playing a part in The Fast And The Furious franchise, Hobbs and Shaw is given a strangely short 25/1 price to take the most money at the UK Box Office in 2019, and the final film sees yet another live-action Disney remake in contention, Aladdin given odds of 50/1.
