WATCH: LeBron James’ home Lakers debut overshadowed by brawl

All eyes at Staples Center were on LeBron James on Saturday night, as he led the Los Angeles Lakers in their home opener against the Houston Rockets.

With both teams losing on opening night, there was a sense of urgency for both teams to pick up their first win of the 2018/19 season in what looks set to be a stacked Western Conference this year.

In the end it was Houston, led by 36 points from James Harden, who secured the 124-115 victory, with both the result and James’ debut display at Staples – during which he scored 24 points – overshadowed by a brawl late in the fourth quarter.

It was started with a shove from Lakers forward Brandon Ingram on reigning MVP Harden, before point guards Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul squared up to each other. A hand in the face from Paul provoked a punch from Rondo, with Paul responding with two hits of his own before eventually being separated.

James, a close friend of opponent Paul, was quick to restrain the Rockets guard away from the situation, with Ingram also becoming involved by attempting to throw a punch of his own from a blind spot.

The NBA has since announced that Paul will be suspended for each of Houston’s next two games, with Rondo and Ingram being banned for three and four games respectively for their part in the melee.

Take a look at the brawl below, with the fans at Staples Center – some of whom paid $30,000 for courtside seats – certainly getting more than what they bargained for.
