Alavés vs Atletico Madrid: Preview & Prediction

Atlético Madrid make the trip to Mendizorroza to take on Alaves this Sunday in La Liga. Atletico need a win to keep a hold of their spot in the Champions League spaces, whereas Alaves could begin to close in on the top half of the table with a win.

            Date: 21/04/2024

            Kick off time: 17:30

            Location: Mendizorroza

The spot in the Champions League next year is not yet secured for Atletico Madrid, with Atletico Bilbao hot on their heels and Girona and Barcelona a bit further up the road. Alaves, however, could launch a late push for the top half of the table.

Alaves currently sit 14th in La Liga after 31 games. The Blue and Whites have eight wins, eight draws and 15 losses, leaving them on 32 points, seven points above the relegation zone.

The Blue and Whites have been weak in attack this season. In 31 games, Alaves have scored 26 goals, an average of 0.87 goals a game. Alaves have been much better defensively, conceding 36 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, currently sit fourth in La Liga. In 31 games, Atletico have 19 wins, four draws and eight losses which leaves them on 61 points, four points from Girona and nine points from Barcelona.

The Colchoneros have been consistent in front of goal this season. Atletico have scored 59 goals in 31 games giving them an average of 1.90 goals a game. Atletico have been less consistent at the other end of the pitch, conceding 36 goals and conceding nine clean sheets.

Atletico Madrid and Alaves have met 21 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back 1998. Atletico have a better record in the fixture with 12 wins in comparison to Alaves picking up five wins, the other four games ending in a draw.

The last five games in the fixture have seen four wins for Atletico Madrid and one win for Alaves. Other than the one 4 - 1 win for Atletico Madrid, this fixture is usually a low-scoring affair.

In their last five games in all competitions, Alaves have one win and four losses.

Alaves failed to convert any of their four shots on target against Osasuna, as Ante Budimir scored in the 76th minute to give Osasuna the 1 - 0 win over Alaves.

However, the next time out saw Alaves on the right side of the 1 - 0 scoreline. The visit from Rayo Vallecano saw Andoni Gorosabel score the only goal of the game in the 44th minute to give Alaves the 1 - 0 win, despite having just 33% of the possession.

The showing against Real Sociedad saw Alaves only manage three shots for the entire 90 minutes, without a single one being on target. Jon Pacheco scored the only goal of the game just before the hour mark to give Real Sociedad the 1 - 0 win.
