BAYERN VS WOLFSBURG: PREVIEW, PREDICTION & BETTING TIPS

Bayern Munich host Wolfsburg at the weekend with both sides already preparing for next season domestically.

              Location: Allianz Arena

              Date: 12/05/2024

              Kick-Off: 4.30 PM

The hosts will end this season without a Bundesliga title for the first time since 2012, following their campaign which has seen them dethroned by Bayer Leverkusen. Bayern Munich have no worries about UEFA Champions League qualification, although they could still lose out on a top-two place if they drop points in their remaining two fixtures.

As it stands, the hosts have their focus on the UEFA Champions League this season. Bayern Munich are in the semi-final of the competition and currently possesses a 2-2 score in their tie against Real Madrid. Bayern face Real Madrid in the second leg, four days before their game against Wolfsburg at the weekend.

Away from the performances on the pitch, Bayern Munich will be looking for a new manager as Thomas Tuchel is set to leave the club. In recent weeks we have seen the likes of Ralf Rangnick and Erik Ten Hag linked with the soon-to-be vacant position.

As for their opponents Wolfsburg, they will most likely be finishing in a mid-table position this season. Wolfsburg have an outside chance of securing a seventh-placed finish being four points behind, although it is considered highly unlikely.

The previous league meeting between the two sides resulted in a 2-1 win for Bayern Munich. Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala scored the two goals needed for Bayern that day.

              RECENT FORM

The recent history between the two sides suggests that Bayern Munich will be the overwhelming favourites heading into this game against Vfl Wolfsburg. Bayern Munich have won four out of the last five league games between the two sides, with Wolfsburg only managing a draw in that sequence.

In the last 20 meetings between the two teams, Bayern Munich have been the victors on 17 occasions, drawing twice and losing only once. Coincidentally, the home side are also unbeaten in their last 17 games in all competitions against their visitors, having experienced their only defeat in 2015.

Wolfsburg were the winners of the German Super Cup that year after they beat Bayern Munich on penalties after the game finished 1-1. Nicklas Bendtner scored that day for Wolfsburg and the Danish striker also scored the deciding penalty.

In the last ten meetings between the two sides, there have been two dismissals. The most recent fixture where they were dismissals was in 2023, where Joshua Kimmich was sent off in a 4-2 win for Bayern Munich away from home.

Bayern Munich are looking to make it consecutive seasons where they will be to achieve a league double over Wolfsburg. The home side won the fixture last season 4-2 away from home and secured a 2-0 win at the Allianz Stadium. Bayern Munich secured the win over their opponents that day thanks to first-half goals from Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller.

In the last five meetings between the two teams, Bayern Munich have averaged over two goals scored per game and has recorded two clean sheets in those five games played. It is worth noting that Bayern Munich have a tremendous record of scoring in the first half of matches against Wolfsburg.

Bayern Munich have scored a first-half goal in each of their last five games against the away side. You will have to go back to 2019 the last time Bayern Munich failed to score in the first 45 minutes of a game against Wolfsburg.

At the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich have an impressive home record in the league. Bayern Munich have played 16 games at home this season, winning 13, drawing once and losing only twice. Their home record is only bettered by newly crowned Bundesliga Champions, Bayer Leverkusen.

The hosts boast an impressive 81%-win record at home, having only drawn 6% of their games, and losing only 13%. Bayern Munich have been prolific in front of goal this season, averaging 3.19 goals per game at home in comparison to 2.44 scored away from home. Defensively, they’ve also been superb in that department only conceding 0.75 goals per game and keeping a clean sheet in 44% of their games at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich head into this game against Wolfsburg having won four out of their last five games at home and three wins in their previous five games in general. The hosts have averaged 2.5 points per game at home this season, with their last home defeat being Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund which effectively ended their Bundesliga title hopes.

In Bayern Munich’s previous league game at home, they recorded a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. The hosts had 15 shots on goal, and they took the lead in the ninth minute unsurprisingly through Harry Kane. Hugo Ekitike equalised for Frankfurt midway through the first half, before a second-half strike from Harry Kane secured the victory for Bayern Munich.

Bayern are heading into this game on reels of a disappointing defeat against Stuttgart. Harry Kane was once again on hand to score for the visitors that game, although his contribution meant very little as Stuttgart were 3-1 winners.

Harry Kane has arguably been the most prolific striker in European football this season during his debut campaign at Bayern Munich. The English international made the move away from Tottenham Hotspur last summer and during his first year has broken multiple records in Germany.

Kane has become the fastest player to break 20 league goals in the Bundesliga as well as becoming the top-scoring Englishmen in a single season – surpassing Jadon Sancho and Kevin Keegan.

Harry Kane is in brilliant form, having scored five goals in his last five games. Kane has scored 36 league goals this season, as well as providing eight assists. Kane averages 1.1 goals per game, scoring a goal every 79 minutes.

Wolfsburg’s away form and most recent record against Bayern Munich doesn’t make for good reading heading into this game. The visitors have played 16 games away from home this season and have won only 24% of their away fixtures this season.

Their away record stands at four wins, three draws and nine losses in 16 games played. Wolfsburg have only twice in their last five away games and three wins in five in general. Wolfsburg has averaged 0.94 points per game away from this season in comparison to 1.38 points per game gained.

The positive for Wolfsburg is that their most recent away fixture resulted in a 2-1 win over Freiburg. Freiburg took the lead through a Sebastiaan Bornauw own goal much to Wolfsburg’s dismay. Kiliann Sildillia was dismissed in the second half for the home side, which allowed Maximilian Arnold to equalise. Arnold then contributed a late assist for Maxence Lacroix as Wolfsburg held on for the win.

Jonas Wind needs to be on form for Wolfsburg if the away side are to have any chance of securing a victory over Bayern Munich. The Danish international has 18 goal contributions this season and is enjoying a fine season at Wolfsburg. The 25-year-old has averaged 0.3 goals per game. Jonas Wind has made the Bundesliga Team of the Week on three occasions this season. Wind has two goals in his last three games.
