bet365’s Bonus 6 Scores Challenge offers a chance at winning £250,000 this weekend!

The Tyne-Wear Derby stars in the FA Cup third round fixtures this weekend, with three Premier League head-to-heads and some lower league contenders also hoping to make the fourth round

As football continues to modernise and evolve, the magic of the FA Cup remains timeless as footballing minnows have their shot at spoiling the party for the teams plying their trade in the higher divisions.

With the third round being drawn for the 143rd edition of the competition, some exciting fixtures have been confirmed with the draw serving up a huge local derby that could steal the show.

Premier League teams are guaranteed to be knocked out by familiar opposition due to top flight pairings, whilst non-league representatives continue to defy the odds and fulfil “giant killer” roles.

Premier League Encounters

The universal opinion would arguably be that the pick of the Premier League games will be headlined by Arsenal v Liverpool; two sides who’ll be looking to get the edge over one another as they occupy Top Four spots.

There’s little to separate the two sides in what you’d expect to be an attacking encounter of high quality. The pressures of competing in the FA Cup should be non-existent too with both sides recently winning the competition - Arsenal in 2019/20, and Liverpool in 2020/21.

High-flying Aston Villa travel to Middlesbrough with Unai Emery’s men realistically able to go all the way in the completion this season. Tottenham are certainly contenders to claim a long-awaited cup too, as they continue to play entertaining, combative, football under Ange Postecoglou.

League form would suggest Spurs will be able to better Burnley with ease, but Vincent Kompany is a two-time FA Cup winner as a player who knows how to manoeuvre his way through the competition. Can he help Burnley cause an upset against “Ange Ball”?

Crystal Palace and Everton will now have to replay their Third Round fixture after a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park saw little action outside of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s controversial sending off.

Elsewhere, Brentford v Wolverhampton Wanderers could also offer EPL fans a chance to sneak their way into trophy contention as league medal chances remain a huge unlikelihood.

Derby Day

It was a rivalry once played out more commonly, but the Tyne-Wear Derby has been on hold since March 2016 due to the differing fortunes between the two sides.

Sunderland have appointed former Rangers boss Michael Beale after parting ways with Tony Mowbray, and their solid Championship positioning of 6th is nothing to shun. Beating their black and white neighbours will be a more difficult task than the more recent meetings between the sides.

Newcastle have found themselves existing in stronger positions than were they’re at currently. After the elation of Champions League qualification for this season, the new owner’s financial power, and the feel-good factor around the club; they’re stuttering.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies have fallen out of European competition, and now sit in 9th place having only been able to pick up three points from the last six games. Even if Newcastle are licking their wounds at this moment in time, it’s a perfect chance to get back to winning ways with a first win over their rivals in over 12 years.

Sunderland arguably find themselves in a win-win position given the expectation placed on Newcastle to better them, but anything is possible on Derby Day.
