Fulham vs Newcastle United: Betting Tips, Match Prediction & Preview

Thirteenth meets tenth in the fourth round of the FA Cup as Newcastle travel down to Craven Cottage in an all-Premier League affair.

              • Date: 27/01/24
              • Kick-off time: 19:00
              • Venue: Craven Cottage

In this evening kick-off, Premier League sides Fulham and Newcastle will be battling to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup. There is not much to separate both sides in the table, though the visitors have underachieved this season.

Despite qualifying for the Champions League last season, Newcastle currently sit in tenth, just five points and three places above their hosts. They are in the midst of a terrible stretch of form, losing four league games in a row, which has seen them fall 14 points behind the top four. After finishing bottom of their Champions League group and falling at the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, Eddie Howe’s men will be desperate for a good FA Cup run to salvage their season.

In 13th, Fulham are as close to the relegation zone as they are to seventh place, as they enter an important stretch of games which could define their season.

To get to the fourth round, Fulham edged past Championship side Rotherham 1-0, who sit bottom of the league. Newcastle won 3-0 at the Stadium of Light in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

The Magpies have not reached this stage of the competition since 2020, when they made it to the quarter-finals. They have lost three third-round ties in a row, including last season when they lost 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. The Toon Army have won the competition four times in their history, though have not tasted success since 1955.

Fulham made it to the quarter-finals last season, but lost 3-1 at Old Trafford to Manchester United. This was their best cup run in over a decade. They had lost in the fourth round in three consecutive seasons prior.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson lead the way for Newcastle with 14 and eight goals respectively, though the latter is currently sidelined through injury. Eddie Howe will be looking to the Swede to provide an offensive spark, as well as Anthony Gordon, who has chipped in with seven goals and five assists.

Whilst they have had no issue scoring goals, keeping them out is something they will have to improve on. In their last three league games, Newcastle have conceded nine goals, and their stumbling defence will be an area for Fulham to take advantage of. Although no player has scored more than five for Marco Silva, Raul Jimenez, Willian and Bobby De Cordova-Reid can provide a dangerous threat.

This will be the 79th meeting between Fulham and Newcastle but the first in the FA Cup since 1961. There is very little to split the two teams, with Fulham winning 31, and Newcastle 32.

The most recent meeting came in the Premier League in December as the Magpies comfortably won 3-0. Goals came from teenager Lewis Miley, Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn. This victory stretched Newcastle’s winning streak against this weekend’s opponents to four.

In fact, the Whites have not won in seven games, their last triumph over the Geordies coming in March 2017, when both sides were in the Championship.

              Newcastle United Team News

Eddie Howe has a long list of long-term injuries to deal with. No players are expected to make a return for this game with the likes of Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and Matt Targett not due to return until next month. Callum Wilson could make a comeback at the end of the month.

              Form Guide

              Fulham

In their last five games, Fulham have won two and lost three. Before they take on Newcastle this weekend, they have a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool to contend with. The first leg was at Anfield, where they narrowly lost 2-1 despite taking the lead through Willian. Two quick-fire goals in the second half give Liverpool the advantage.

Last time out saw them take on West London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but they fell to a 1-0 defeat, a Cole Palmer penalty in first-half stoppage time the difference between the two sides. Prior to this, they edged past Rotherham to make it to this stage of the FA Cup, a De Cordova-Reid goal in the 24th minute sealing the victory.

Whilst the results could have been better, they did record an impressive win at home to Arsenal in which goals from Jimenez and De Cordova-Reid cancelled out a Bukayo Saka opener. Before the victory over the Gunners, they were amidst a three-game losing streak in the league, the last of which being a 3-0 loss at Bournemouth.

              Newcastle United

In their last five games, Newcastle have won once and lost four. The Magpies are enduring a difficult run in which their only victory was a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light against their arch-rivals Sunderland in the last round of the FA Cup. Isak scored a brace after Daniel Ballard opened the scoring with an own goal.

Their most recent game saw them heartbreakingly lose in the final minutes to Manchester City. After initially falling behind to a Bernardo Silva goal, Isak and Gordon struck twice in as many minutes to quickly take the lead. However, the introduction of Kevin De Bruyne changed the game as he provided a goal and assist to condemn Newcastle to defeat.

It was a horrible outcome for a team in desperate need for points, as they have now lost four Premier League games in a row. Liverpool beat them 4-2 at Anfield after they were defeated 3-1 against Nottingham Forest and 1-0 at Luton.
