Premier League meets Championship in the fourth round of the FA Cup as Norwich hope to provide an upset when they face Liverpool at Anfield.
Liverpool are enjoying a very successful campaign so far, sitting top of the Premier League, five points clear of Manchester City having played a game more. The Canaries, in contrast, are battling for a play-off place in a bid to return to the top flight for the first time since 2022. They are currently on the outside looking in, but are just two points off Coventry City in sixth place.
Norwich required a replay against League One Bristol Rovers to make the fourth round, a 3-1 win at Memorial Stadium ensuring their progress. Liverpool advanced following a 2-0 win in the tie of the round against Arsenal.
Both teams will be hoping to make it further than they did last year, as Liverpool fell at this hurdle whilst Norwich lost in the round prior. The Reds were defeated by fellow Premier League side Brighton. Kaoru Mitoma scored a stoppage-time winner as the Seagulls came from behind to advance. Blackburn were the victors in a third-round tie at Carrow Road.
Jurgen Klopp’s side won the competition in 2022, the same season in which they completed a domestic double. Liverpool have won the trophy eight times in their history, the joint-third most of any club. The Canaries have never won the FA Cup and have made it past the fifth round just once in 21 seasons.
With Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool will be without their main goal-scoring threat. However, they have an abundance of attacking talent to rely on in his absence. Whilst Salah leads the way with 18 goals, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have chipped in with 11 and nine respectively, so Klopp will be looking to the pair to provide a spark. Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz should also expect to share some of the load. Jonathan Rowe is Norwich’s go-to man, with his 13 goals topping the charts for his club.
Liverpool and Norwich have met a total of 70 times, the majority in recent years taking place in the Premier League.
The Reds have dominated this fixture historically, coming out on top 41 times. Norwich have won just 14 games. The most recent matchup was actually in the FA Cup, a Takumi Minamino brace sending Liverpool into the quarter-finals in 2022. They went on to win the competition. It stretched their winning streak against the Canaries to seven games. They have won 12 games in their last 14 in all competitions against the same opponents. The other two ended in draws.
Norwich have not beaten Liverpool since 1994, when they won 1-0 at Anfield.
