David De Gea is perhaps the most notable free agent in world football at present having failed to agree on new terms with Manchester United at the end of the 2022/23 season, seeing the Red Devils opt to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

The 32-year-old had spent a total of 12 years at Old Trafford, breaking the club’s clean sheet record that was once held by Peter Schmeichel (now 190), while also holding the record for most appearances by an overseas player at the club. During his time at United, De Gea won eight major honours and was part of United’s last Premier League title-winning side back in 2013.

The emergence of the Saudi Pro League has been one of the most eye-catching things to happen to football this summer, with the Saudi Public Investment Fund seemingly looking to blow any competition out of the water in a bid to strengthen the league as a whole.

De Gea has been linked with the likes of Al Nassr, where former United teammates Alex Telles and Cristiano Ronaldo ply their trades alongside the likes of Marcelo Brozovic and Sadio Mane.

With eye-watering wages being offered and Edouard Mendy one of a few high-profile goalkeepers to play in the Saudi top flight, could De Gea move to the Middle East?

Bayern Munich are reportedly on the search for a new goalkeeper with Yann Sommer being on the verge of joining Inter Milan following the sale of Onana to United.

Manuel Neuer has just returned following a leg break that he suffered back in December. The 37-year-old shot-stopper has managed to make 30 Bundesliga appearances in just two of his last seven campaigns at the Allianz Arena, meaning that De Gea would likely be able to get a decent amount of game time should Neuer’s injury woes continue.

Could a return to Atletico Madrid be on the cards for De Gea?

The 32-year-old made a total of 84 first-team appearances for Atleti between 2009 and 2011 and even won the likes of the UEFA Europa League with the club in the 2009/10 season.

With Jan Oblak in goal for Atletico, it looks like a big ask to shift the 30-year-old Slovenian from his position as first-choice goalkeeper at the club, however, Oblak was not involved in any of his side’s last eight league matches at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Sevilla are reportedly interested in acquiring De Gea, however, this may only come to fruition should the likes of highly-touted goalkeeper Yassine Bounou leaves the club.

Reports emerged earlier on this summer that the La Liga outfit had listed up their whole squad for sale due to having debts of €90 million. This would mean that signing De Gea on a free transfer could be beneficial in order to earn a quick profit on the likes of Bounou should Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side opt to sell the Morocco international.

Fenerbahce are another side that have been closely linked with a move for De Gea as the Turkish Super Lig giants look to break their nine-year title drought.

Ismail Kartal’s side are full of players that have previously played their football in the British Isles, having added Ryan Kent, Dusan Tadic and Edin Dezko to a squad that already contains the likes of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Joshua King and Michy Batshuayi - could De Gea add to this list?

On top of this, Fener’s first-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has been hampered with injury problems over the past two seasons, having only played 50 games during this time, meaning that De Gea would certainly be a welcome addition to the club.
