Fulham vs Manchester City: Preview & Prediction

Manchester City travel to London to take on Fulham, hoping to pick up another three points and move one step closer to another Premier League title.

            Date: 11/05/24

            Kick-off time: 12:30

            Venue: Craven Cottage

With just three games remaining, Man City and Pep Guardiola are closing in on a fourth consecutive league title. They currently sit second, a point behind leaders Arsenal, but have a game in hand, meaning they are in control and it is theirs to lose. Ever since they drew 0-0 at home to the Gunners, they have won six in a row, taking advantage of both Mikel Arteta’s side and Liverpool’s slip-ups. Victory against Fulham would leave them two wins away. Any dropped points would hand the initiative right back to Arsenal with so little time left.

Fulham, in contrast, have little to play for, as they occupy 12th place in the table. They only have two games left, and trail Bournemouth in 10th by four points. Therefore, a top half finish is unlikely, though they will want to finish as high as possible. Both Brighton and Crystal Palace are just behind, so a defeat could see them drop.

The hosts have won just once in their last six games, so face a very difficult task in stopping their opponents. Only Arsenal have scored more than Man City, with 25 of their 87 goals belonging to Erling Haaland. The striker is red hot at the moment, having scored a hat-trick in their last game against Wolves. Marco Silva’s team have conceded eight in their last six, but will have to be at the top of their game to keep the Norwegian quiet. Haaland is not the only attacking option, of course, with Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez also combining for 26 goals. If Fulham are to pose a threat of their own, it is likely to come from Rodrigo Muniz, who is their top scorer with nine strikes.

This head-to-head is extremely one-sided, unsurprisingly in the favour of Man City. In all competitions, City have won 15 meetings in a row, dating back to February 2012. It is an extraordinary record that they will be hoping to extend this weekend. The last time Fulham were victorious in this fixture was all the way back in 2009, when they won 3-1 away from home. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended 5-1 to City in a dominant victory. Alvarez and Nathan Ake put them two-up before the break, and Haaland added a second half hat-trick. Tim Ream briefly equalised for Fulham in the first.

            Form Guide

            Fulham

In their last five games, Fulham have won one, drawn two and lost two. It has been an inconsistent stretch for a Fulham side who no longer have much to play for. The run started with a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle. The hosts were superior in possession, and attempted more shots, however could not find a breakthrough. The winning goal came late on, with Bruno Guimaraes’ 81st minute strike proving to be the difference between the two sides.

They responded well to this loss with a 2-0 win at West Ham. There were plenty of chances for both teams, but Andreas Pereira’s brace, which included a goal in each half, ensured all three points. Liverpool proved too strong for them in a 3-1 home loss. Trent Alexander-Arnold put the Reds ahead, but Timothy Castagne cancelled the opener out with an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. Ryan Gravenberch restored the Liverpool lead shortly after the restart, before Diogo Jota added a third.

More dropped points followed, with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. Rodrigo Muniz broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, and this was a lead they held onto until late, when Jeffrey Schlupp netted a leveller with three minutes to go. Their most recent game was against West London neighbours Brentford in which they drew 0-0. It was an even game with Brentford edging possession, and Fulham attempting more shots. However, neither side could find a breakthrough.

            Man City:

In their last five games, Manchester City have won four and drawn one. It has been an unbeaten stretch for Man City, though they had to deal with the disappointment with being eliminated from the Champions League. That is where this run started, as they took on Real Madrid in the second leg of the quarter-final. The first leg had ended 3-3 at the Bernabeu, and the second resulted in another draw, this time 1-1. Rodrygo put Madrid in front early on, but Kevin De Bruyne equalised to send the game to extra-time. Neither side could find the winning goal, meaning the tie was determined on penalties. Los Blancos prevailed 4-3 after Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic missed from the spot.

Focus shifted to FA Cup action, with City facing Chelsea in the semi-final. The Blues rued a number of missed chances as Pep Guardiola’s side won 1-0 to advance to the final. Silva scored the winner with six minutes to go. They returned to Premier League action with a dominant 4-0 win at Brighton. De Bruyne broke the deadlock, before Phil Foden scored a brace to extend the lead before the break. Julian Alvarez added a fourth in the second half to complete the rout.

Nottingham Forest put up a fight, but could not keep the Champions out as City recorded a 2-0 victory away from home. Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring, and Erling Haaland doubled their advantage. Their most recent game was a home fixture against Wolves. They were convincing 5-winners, with Haaland netting four goals. Alvarez scored the fifth whilst Hwang Hee-chan got the consolation.
