Everything You Need to Know About the Community Shield

The Community Shield in England is the representative for the start of the season, with the winner of the league taking on the winner of the FA Cup, with this years’ trophy a bit more special with it being the 100th time the tournament has taken place since its invention as the Charity Shield in 1908.

In its 99 previous finals, Manchester United have managed the most wins, taking home the trophy 21 times, with it being shared four times, with Sir Alex Ferguson and Ryan Giggs being the most successful people in the competition’s history, both winning the trophy nine times each.

Statistics Heading Into the 2022/23 Community Shield

For the first time in ten years and only the eighth time since 1974, the Community Shield will not be held at Wembley Stadium, with this years’ final taking place at the King Power Stadium, the home of last year's winners, Leicester City.

Interestingly, in seven of the past eight years, the winners of the Community Shield have been the winners of the FA Cup, with the exception in recent years being Manchester City beating Chelsea 2-0 in 2018.

This is only the second time Manchester City and Liverpool have faced off in the Community Shield, with their other meeting coming recently in 2019, with the game going all the way to a penalty shoot-out, with City coming out victors after Claudio Bravo saved Georginio Wijnaldum’s penalty.

In this final, Manchester City are looking to tie Tottenham Hotspur with the fifth most Community Shield wins with seven wins, whilst Liverpool are looking for their first Community Shield since 2006 and are seeking to tie with Arsenal for the 2nd most Community Shield wins with 16 titles

This game will likely debut the two exciting young strikers entering the Premier League, with Erling Haaland joining Manchester City for £54 million and Darwin Nunez joining Liverpool for £68 million and could see the start of a great rivalry between the two, with both already showing promise in pre-season with Haaland bagging a goal against Bayern Munich and Nunez scoring four goals in one half against RB Leipzig.

Liverpool versus Man City has been the highest level of football in England for a few years now, but in their past ten meetings, it's been City who has been getting the better of the two teams, winning four times, with Liverpool only winning twice, with there being four draws.
