Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after they overcame the Kansas City Chiefs at the Raymond James Stadium. This nomination is the first for Brady in his long illustrious career.

Brady had won six previous Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, the team he spent 19 years of his career at before moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This victory for Brady made him the only quarterback to win the Super Bowl in three different decades - as the American is still going at 44-years-old and after a very short-lived retirement.

His performance in Super Bowl LV (55) at 43-years-old made him the oldest player to win the Super Bowl as the starting quarterback and the oldest ever Super Bowl MVP.

American swimmer Caeleb Dressel brought his brand of complete domination to the Tokyo Olympics in the summer. The second time nominee of Sportsman of the Year won a staggering five gold medals, three individual golds and two in the relays.

Dressel’s three individual gold medals came in the 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 100m butterfly. The American became the first-ever swimmer to win this treble at an Olympics. The relay success came in the 4x100m freestyle and the 4x100m medley for the American team.

The medley team broke the world record and Dressel broke his own world record in the 100m butterfly. This now means that Dressel holds three long course world records and six short course world records and seven career Olympic gold medals.

The Dutch Formula One star picked up his first World Drivers Championship in 2021 and a second Sportsman of the Year nomination after one of the most dramatic and closely contested seasons in the sport. Verstappen’s overtake on Lewis Hamilton on turn five in Abu Dhabi ended the title challenge on the last lap.

Verstappen won ten of the 22 races in the 2021 F1 season and had 18 podium finishes, a record. The Dutchman finished 19 of the 22 races, two retirements coming after collisions with title rival Hamilton in Monza and Silverstone and one abnormal tyre failure in Azerbaijan.

Verstappen failed to break Sebastian Vettel’s record of being the youngest ever World Driver’s Championship winner but does have the record of the youngest winner of a Grand Prix and youngest driver to ever compete in a Grand Prix.

The Dutch driver won the Barcelona Grand Prix in 2016 at 18 for his first win, and first raced in F1 at 17 years old in Australia in 2015. The latter record is unlikely to ever be broken as rules now state you have to be 18 to drive in Formula One.

Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski receives his second Sportsman of the Year nomination after a record-breaking season with Bayern Munich.

The German giants won their ninth successive Bundesliga title in 2021 with massive help from their frontman Lewandowski. The Pole scored 41 goals in the Bundesliga - his last coming on the final day of the season.

This goal meant he broke Gerd Muller's record of 40 goals in a single Bundesliga season, a record that has stood since the 1971/72 season.

Lewandowski scored 69 goals in the 2021 calendar year, for both Bayern Munich and Poland and picked up the European Golden Shoe and a second-place finish in the Ballon d’Or.

At the beginning of the new season, he reached 300 goals for Bayern Munich and 500 career goals and in November he set a new Bundesliga record for the most goals in a calendar year - 43.

Legendary Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge receives his second-ever Sportsman of the Year nomination after his performance at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.

His gold medal performance in the marathon this summer made him the third person in history to win back-to-back marathon gold medals at the Olympics.

Despite the difficult conditions in Tokyo, the 36-year-old went on the set a time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 30 seconds, with a minute interval between himself and second place Abdi Nageeye.

Kipchoge is also the current world record holder for the marathon with a time of 2:01:39. However, the Kenyan also ran a marathon in under two hours in an unofficial event in Austria.

The Serbian tennis player is looking to win his fifth Sportsman of the Year award with his seventh nomination in total.

Djokovic won three Grand Slams in 2021, the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. These wins take the total number of career Grand Slams for Djokovic to 20 which is level with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Other honours won by the Serbian in 2021 include the Belgrade Open and the Paris Masters. Djokovic also bested Roger Federer’s record of 310 weeks ranked as world No. 1.

Djokovic just missed out on the “Golden Grand Slam” when he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the final of the US Open and could only manage fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
