Wigan vs Northampton Prediction, Tips & Stats

Wigan welcome Northampton to the DW Stadium this Saturday for another League One clash. The hosts will be looking for another win in order to take themselves out of the minus points for the season, whereas Northampton will be aiming to get their first win on the board for this League One season.

The Latics currently sit in 24th in League One due to starting the season with negative eight points due to a deduction for failing to deposit funds to cover the clubs wage bill. This deduction meant that despite winning their opening game, Wigan sit last, still five points adrift of the closest club, Port Vale.

Wigan travelled to Derby for their opening game of the League One season. The Latics took the lead in the first half through a goal from Charlie Wyke, before Derby equalised at the start of the second half through Craig Forsyth. However, in the 72nd minute, Wyte secured his brace and grabbed all three points for Wigan.

In their midweek game against Wrexham in the League Cup, Wigan played out a 0 - 0 draw in normal time. After the goalless draw, The Latics were forced into a penalty shootout where after misses from Charlie Hughes and Thelo Aasgaard, Wrexham, who scored all of their penalties, won 4 - 2.

Northampton sit 17th in League One on zero points after their first game of the season. However, they are one of five different teams all sitting on negative one goal difference meaning that there is a big jump up the table possible with a win.

The Cobblers lost their first league game of the season against Stevenage, one of the teams also promoted to League One last season. A Carl Piergianni goal in the 80th minute gave Stevenage all three points as Northampton failed to register a single shot on goal in the 90 minutes.

Northampton faced Championship side Swansea in the League Cup in the midweek which ended in a miserable trip to Wales for The Cobblers. A double from Joel Piroe and then a late goal from Josh Ginnelly in the 94th minute gave Swansea a 3 - 0 win and a spot in the Second Round.

Wigan and Northampton have faced each other 37 times in their histories, their first meeting coming back in 1978. The Latics do have the edge in this fixture having beaten Northampton on 19 occasions, the most recent example of this coming back in 2021 where Wigan beat Northampton 1 - 0 in the league.

Northampton have won this fixture 12 times, with the six other encounters ending in a draw. The last win for The Cobblers against Wigan came back in 2020 with a big 3 - 2 win in the league.

A player to watch in this clash is Wyke. After his double last weekend against Derby, Wyke has the momentum to find the back of the net yet again, especially against a newly promoted team like Northampton.

          Wigan Team News

Despite having a midweek clash, Wigan are unlikely to make too many changes to the side Shaun Maloney put out against Derby County. Wyke is likely to retain his spot as starting striker after his brace last Saturday, along with the likes of Stephen Humphrys and Callum McManaman on the wings.

          Northampton Team News

Northampton also had a midweek match, but Jon Brady is also likely to stick with the team he started against Stevenage. Sam Hoskins and Tyreece Simpson are likely to remain as the attacking option for Northampton with Jon Guthrie remaining at the heart of the defence.
