The 10 Best Loan Signings in Premier League History

Here we have taken a look back at the 10 best loan signings in Premier League history with the summer transfer window currently being open and many players looking to move away from their club sides in a bid for more first-team football.

Carlos Tevez: West Ham United to Manchester United

The first player to feature on this list is Carlos Tevez, having joined Manchester United on loan from West Ham in the summer of 2007 on a two-year deal. The Argentina star had previously kept the Hammers up on the final day of the previous season via a goal against United at Old Trafford, relegating Sheffield United in the process.

Tevez was a hit with the Old Trafford faithful and scoring 34 and assisting 14 in 99 appearances for the Red Devils, playing a vital part in winning one Community Shield, two Premier League titles, one League Cup, a Champions League and the Club World Cup between 2007 and 2009 before he left on sour terms via a third-party ownership move to cross-town rivals Manchester City.

Ivan Campo: Real Madrid to Bolton Wanderers

Ivan Campo joined Bolton Wanderers from Real Madrid on loan in the summer of 2002, just months after helping Real to win the Champions League, as well as the La Liga title just one year prior to his move to the Reebok Stadium. Bolton were an interesting unit, as Sam Allardyce’s side persistently managed to get coups such as Jay-Jay Okocha and French world cup winner Youri Djorkaeff.

Campo made 31 appearances for the Trotters in the 2002/03 campaign and impressed Allardyce so much that he swiftly signed him on a three-year deal, with Campo deciding that he preferred to live in Bolton than Madrid. The former Spain international became a fan favourite at Bolton due to his tenacious style of play and stayed there till 2008.

Mikel Arteta: Real Sociedad to Everton

Another Spanish midfielder who swapped life in his homeland for the north of England is current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. The 39-year-old was signed from Real Sociedad on loan following a failed period at the Basque club that following the sale of midfielder partner Xabi Alonso to Liverpool.

David Moyes quickly swooped in for the Spaniard in January 2005, replacing Thomas Graversen who had departed to Real Madrid and impressed as Everton managed to qualify for the Champions League that season. Moyes signed Arteta for a bargain price of £2m and managed to keep the former Rangers man at the club till he joined Arsenal in the summer of 2011. Arteta played 209 times for the Toffees, scoring 35 and assisting 35 goals.

Loic Remy: QPR to Newcastle United

Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers to Newcastle United is perhaps one that will jog a few memories. The Frenchman had joined the Loftus Road based club in January 2013 for £8m and had impressed, scoring six goals in 16 Premier League games, despite Harry Redknapp’s side suffering relegation.

This triggered Newcastle’s interest in the midst of their period of constantly investing in French talents such as Moussa Sissoko, Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa and Alan Pardew’s side move swiftly to make a loan move happen. Remy was a huge fan favourite in his time on Tyneside, firing in 14 goals in 26 games in the 2013/14 season which caught the eye of Chelsea who triggered his release clause of £10.5m and took him to Stamford Bridge from QPR.

Romelu Lukaku: Chelsea to West Bromwich Albion

Lukaku has been part of two Premier League loan moves in his career impressing with both Everton and West Bromwich Albion, with the latter one arguably impressing the most as he burst onto the scene for a more unfashionable outfit, scoring 17 goals in 35 matches for the Baggies, helping Steve Clarke’s side to an eighth-place finish in the 2012/13 campaign.

The Belgian was somehow never given the opportunity at Chelsea to prove himself after this incredible spell, seeing him being loaned out to Everton where he scored 15 in 31 matches before the Toffees made this deal permanent. Since leaving Stamford Bridge permanently Lukaku has scored 128 goals in 248 league matches.

Raul Jimenez: Benfica to Wolverhampton Wanderers

This loan move is perhaps slightly forgotten about due to Wolves signing Mexican striker Raul Jimenez for £30m just one season after the Molineux’s clubs superb Premier League campaign under Nuno Espirito Santo in 2018/19 following their promotion from the Championship the season before, but Jimenez was on loan from Benfica in their first season back in England’s top-flight since 2011/12 and managed 13 goals in 38 matches.

Jiminez has found his feet at Molineux following relatively unimpressive spells at Atletico Madrid and Benfica in 2014/15 and 2015 until 2018, where he managed to score 19 goals in 101 appearances, as the Mexican has found the back of the net 21 times in 48 league matches since making his move from Benfica permanent.

Jurgen Klinsmann: Sampdoria to Tottenham Hotspur

In the winter of 1997 German striker, Jurgen Klinsmann made a dramatic return to Tottenham Hotspur on loan, following a short stint at Italian side Sampdoria. The now 56-year-old was already a fan favourite at Spurs following his one season at the club between 1994/95 where he scored 30 goals across all competitions.

This time, Spurs were in desperate need of saving as they were fighting against relegation in the 1998/98 season under Christian Gross and Klinsmann helped inspire their fight to survival, scoring nine goals in 15 matches including four in their 6-2 win against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park in early May 1998 which confirmed Spurs’ place in the division for the following season. This season was Klinsmann’s last in professional football finishing on 227 goals in 506 matches.

Christophe Dugarry: Bordeaux to Birmingham City

Next up is another World Cup winner, as alike Klinsmann in 1990, French star Christophe Dugarry had won the World Cup with France in 1998, five years before he went on a shock loan move from Bordeaux to Birmingham City.

Blues manager Steve Bruce described this transfer as the biggest in his side’s history and the Frenchman didn’t disappoint, as he found the back of the net five times in 15 times for the St Andrew’s club, helping them to five wins in their last eight Premier League games as they finished six points above the relegation zone.

Daniel Sturridge: Chelsea to Bolton Wanderers

Daniel Sturridge to Bolton Wanderers is another blast to the past on this list, as the then Chelsea player departed Stamford Bridge for the second half of the 2010/11 season to join Owen Coyle’s side on loan.

The Trotters were struggling under Coyle and would eventually go on to finish the season seven points above the drop zone in 14th place thanks to the help of Sturridge, who managed eight goals in 12 league appearances, becoming just the sixth player to score in each of his first four appearances for a Premier League club.

The former Manchester City youngsters form impressed Chelsea so much that they tried to give him another chance, before selling him to Liverpool in January 2013 after 13 goals in 63 league appearances for the Blues, he would go on to find the back of the net 50 times in 116 top-flight matches for Liverpool.

Jesse Lingard: Manchester United to West Ham United

The final player on this list comes in the shape of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard. The 28-year-old Warrington born midfielder went on his fifth loan spell away from Old Trafford last January, having not played a single league match for United in the 2020/21 campaign. With West Ham looking to maintain a European football challenge and Lingard not getting much game time, this move proved to be a masterstroke from Irons boss Moyes.

Lingard’s best season of top-flight football had previously been in 2017/18 where he managed eight goals and six assists in 33 appearances, at West Ham he somehow managed to match his goal contributions record in 17 fewer matches, scoring nine and assisting five becoming a cult hero at the London Stadium, helping them to a shock sixth-placed finish.
