5 of the Worst Managerial Reigns at a Premier League Club in Recent Years

Fresh in the minds of not only Palace fans but the rest of the footballing world, Frank De Boer's torrid time in charge of Crystal Palace came to an end after just five games and 77 days, making it the shortest managerial stint in terms of matches played.

The former Ajax man had previously won four Eredivisie titles in a row between 2011-and 2015 as well as a short and unsuccessful tenure at Inter Milan prior to joining the Eagles in 2017.

His appointment garnered a lot of attention, with many hoping he would bring free-flowing attacking football to Selhurst Park. However, after no wins and no goals in all of his Premier League games in charge, Palace chairman Steve Parish gave him the axe.

De Boer’s only success came against Ipswich Town in the EFL cup, whereas Palace went on to have a relatively successful campaign, finishing 11th in Hodgson’s first season in charge.

Bob Bradley came to the UK as the first-ever American to manage a Premier League side.

Swansea may have been sold the American dream but after 11 very dull and un-scintillating performances, the American was sacked in favour of Paul Clement who managed to settle the team and keep them in the league.

According to then, Swansea striker Borja Baston, Bradley’s changes drove the team ‘mad’ with few players understanding exactly what was asked of them. Swansea’s record under Bradley saw them win two, draw two and lose seven – taking eight points from a possible 33. Swansea finished the season in 15th place.

Although Pepe Mel accommodated an abysmal win percentage in his time as the Baggies head coach, it wasn’t the actual reason he was sacked.

His tika-taka style of play did not suit the post-Hodgson/Clarke era at West Brom who just did not have the stylish players needed for his tactics and he was subsequently sacked for requesting to upturn almost half the first-team squad – a relatively acceptable demand given the quality of the first team he was dealing with.

The Spaniard took charge of 17 games for the Baggies, winning just three, drawing six and losing eight – perhaps a slightly better record than others and enough to keep them up, but a poor statistical record nonetheless.

Signing a 3-and-a-half-year deal and replacing Tim Sherwood in November of the 2015/2016 season, Aston Villa fans were optimistic Remi Garde was the man to bring glory, or at very least, stability back to Villa Park.

But, after only two wins in 20, including a humiliating 6-0 thrashing from Liverpool (the highest number of goals Villa have conceded at home in the league since 1983), the Frenchman was shown the door and left leaving fans, players and owners alike very disappointed.

Garde rarely took the blame for his misfortunes at Villa, often citing the players as ‘lacking desire’ in post-match press conferences. Garde left the club exactly where he joined them, the bottom of the league.

Only this time, they had far fewer games to rectify that. Although it was a miracle season for fellow Midlanders, Leicester, Aston Villa had no such luck and following on from Garde’s tenure, they remained bottom of the league and were subsequently relegated back to the Championship, au revoir.

Huddersfield Town appointed Jan Siewart as the successor to fellow German and former Borussia Dortmund II manager David Wagner, following his sacking in the 18/19 season.

Both achieved records with Huddersfield, Wagner coached them from the Championship to the Premier League for the first-ever time since its inaugural season while Siewart unfortunately was the first to send them back down again.

Siewart managed just one win in 15 attempts during his time with The Terriers. Huddersfield confirmed their relegation with six games to go, the third-lowest points total only in Premier League history, ahead of Derby’s turgid 11-point season in 07/08 and Sunderland’s 15 in 05/06.
