Following the recent news that Paulo Fonseca is set to leave AS Roma in the summer after the Serie A outfit have announced that they have agreed terms with Jose Mourinho, we take a look here at five realistic signings that experienced Portuguese manager should look at making.
5 Realistic Signings Mourinho Should Consider With Roma
5 Realistic Signings that Jose Mourinho Should Look at This Summer
Diogo Dalot – Manchester United (On Loan at AC Milan)
The first player on this list is Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot. At present, the 22-year-old is on loan at Serie A outfit AC Milan, but he has played just 35% of the minutes in their league campaign and looks set to be made surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Dalot, is still just 22-years-old and Mourinho knows him well, having signed him at United from Porto in the summer of 2018 for £19m and hailed him as the next Gary Neville. However, things haven’t worked out for the Portuguese man at the Theatre of Dreams, as he was often behind the likes of Brandon Williams and Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the pecking order.
The 22-year-old still has time in his career to show the value and promise that he showed at Porto and in his early days at Old Trafford and could be available for a cut-price fee which would be useful for Roma, as he is an attacking full-back that would suit the 3-4-3 system that they currently employ if Mourinho opts to apply those tactics.
Julian Draxler – Paris Saint-Germain
Julian Draxler could be a name on Roma’s minds, as he could be an ideal replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, whose contract is due to expire at the Stadio Olimpico this summer.
It is well documented that the Armenian didn’t get on with Mourinho at Old Trafford, which lead to a swap deal between him and Alexis Sanchez in January 2018. Having recently criticised Mourinho in a recent interview, it is unlikely that the former Borussia Dortmund man will want to prolong his stay at Roma, despite managing nine goals and nine assists in 30 league appearances.
Draxler is a high-quality player and has been arguably underused by the French champions, as he has featured in just 29% of PSG’s starting line-ups in Ligue 1 this season, leading to the 27-year-old being unwilling to sign a new contract at the Parc des Princes, with his current deal expiring in the summer. In the current financial climate, signing Draxler would be a very astute piece of business as he is a high-quality player and is five years younger than Mkhitaryan.
Nemanja Matic – Manchester United
Nemanja Matic may raise a few eyebrows, however, not many players have been signed by Mourinho for two different clubs! As the Serbian midfielder re-joined Chelsea back in January 2014 for £21m from Benfica, before leaving the Blues for Manchester United in the summer of 2017 for £40m.
The 32-year-old has featured in just 30% of United’s starting line-ups in the Premier League this season, and with the Old Trafford club rumoured to be wanting Declan Rice from West Ham United, the former Benfica man will more than likely be able to leave the club for a reduced fee, as he is reportedly on £120,000 per week.
As we saw in Roma’s 6-2 hammering away at United, they particularly lack defensive stability, of which the Serbian could provide in the middle of the park, due to his defensive awareness and his experience at the highest levels of European football.
Andre Silva – Eintracht Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva is one of the hottest properties in European football at present, due to his impressive goalscoring form in the Bundesliga, having scored 25 goals and made four assists in 29 matches, which sees him level on goals with the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
There are certain factors that could make the 25-year-old attainable for a side like Roma, as he has just two years left on his current contract at Eintracht, as well as having previously had two average spells at AC Milan and Sevilla, meaning that he may not be in as high demand as the likes of Haaland due to his age and past experiences.
With the likes of Edin Dzeko getting on in terms of age, with the former Manchester City man being 35 years old and having fitness issues, a move for the Portuguese striker would be good, due to his goalscoring prowess and availability.
Carlos Vinicius – Benfica (On Loan at Tottenham Hotspur)
The final player on this list of players that Mourinho should consider signing in the summer is Carlos Vinicius.
The Tottenham striker looks destined to return to Benfica, as Spurs are reluctant to activate the €45m buyout clause in his contract. Prior to his time at Spurs, which has seen him score 10 goals in 22 appearances, he managed impressive tallies in Portugal for both Rio Ave and Benfica, finding the back of the net 38 times and making 15 assists in 69 matches.
Vinicius could well be in Roma’s price range and without a striker as formidable as Harry Kane in front of him, this could be his platform to flourish in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
