Cheltenham Festival results on Day 2 see Lee Westwood claim huge bet win

The second day of Cheltenham Festival 2019 was a profitable one for golf star Lee Westwood. Whilst most of golf's other big names gear up for the Players Championship which begins on 14th March, the 45-year-old was busy picking winning horses at the biggest race meeting of the year.

The former world number one placed a huge Super Heinz bet on Ladies Day, which featured seven selections (one horse for each race of the day) and requires only two of the picks to win to make a return. In total the bet uses the seven selections and combines them into 120 bets including 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds and a seven-fold accumulator.

There were several big winners on day one of the festival including one punter who won £14,000 on a Lucky 15, and Westwood now joins the list of big winners for this year.

How Lee Westwood's Cheltenham Festival bet played out

The first selection in the two-time Masters runner-ups bet was City Island who was running in the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle. It was up against strong opposition with the likes of Gordon Elliot's horse Battleoverdoyen, Easy Game which was ridden by Ruby Walsh and Sams Profile all well fancied in the race. Westwood backed City Island and got odds of 8/1, and it was the perfect start for him when the six-year-old nipped in ahead of favourite Champ on the line.

He then backed Topofthegame at 4/1 in the Novices' Chase which also won, before his only loser of the day came in the third which was Killutagh Vic at 16/1.

In the Queen Mother Champion Chase he went with the heavy favourite Altior, who was priced at 4/9 to win. Ridden by Nico de Boinville, it was made to work for the victory but managed to do so and extend his unbeaten record over obstacles to 18. Then came Tiger Roll, another clear favourite at 11/8 in the Glenfarclas Chase. Unlike Altior, last years Grand National winner stormed to victory and ended up finishing a huge 22-lengths ahead of second placed Josies Orders.

In the final two races of the day he had backed Band of Outlaws at 11/2 and Envoi Allen at 9/2, with both securing victory to ensure Westwood had six winners out of seven in his bet. It meant that he won £48,200.91 in total from a £240 stake.

Westwood also won big on Cheltenham Festival 2018

What makes Westwood's huge winner even more incredible is the fact that it is not the first time he has netted a big profit on the Cheltenham Festival. Indeed it was only last year when he landed £20,768 after picking every winning horse on the first day of the festival including Summerville Boy at 9/1 in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle and Mister Whitaker in the Novices' Handicap Chase at 13/2.

He had initially won on Betfred's totejackpot competition by betting on the first six winners of the day. He then went on to bet on the seventh race and managed to pick out another winning horse, which topped his profits up.

When speaking after the winner then, Westwood told the BBC: "I put £128 on the tote [totejackpot] and it paid just under £22,000."

His fortune didn't stop there either. He followed it up by going on to back Samcro and Presenting Percy in the first two races of the second day, both of whom won to make it nine winners out of nine. The run came to end in the Coral Cup when Bleu Berry took the win despite being a huge outsider at 25/1, but Westwood got back on the winning trail in the following race by backing the hot favourite Altior in the Queen Mother Champion Chase to make it 10 wins out of 11.

Based on his record in 2018 and 2019 at the Cheltenham Festival, maybe we should all start looking out for Lee Westwood's horse racing tips in the near future.
