Next Blackburn Rovers Manager Odds

Blackburn Rovers are on the lookout for a new manager for the start of next season, following the recent news that Tony Mowbray is yet to have contract discussions at Ewood Park with his deal having just one week left on it.

The 58-year-old has been managed of Rovers since February 2017 where he was given the task of helping Blackburn avoid relegation to League One from a poor position, despite improvements in form, they are were relegated on the last day of the season, before bouncing back as runners-up in League One the next campaign.

This is by far Mowbray’s longest managerial spell at a team, with this weekend’s fixture set to be the 267th he has been in charge of at the Ewood Park club, winning 107 and drawing 70.

Former Norwich City manager Daniel Farke is the current bookmakers’ favourite for the role at Blackburn.

The German manager has shown that he has what it takes to earn promotion from the Championship, as when he was in charge of the Canaries, he managed to earn two promotions in three full seasons in the second-tier, in both 2018/19 and 2020/21, but was sacked mainly due to his poor record with Norwich in the top-flight earlier on in the season.

Since leaving Norwich, Farke went to Russia to manager Krasnodar, but left the club having managed no games, whilst before his spell at Carrow Road, he had managed Borussia Dortmund II, winning 31 and drawing 22 of 61 matches in charge of them.

Former Blackburn youth midfielder Gareth Ainsworth is the second favourite on this list of managers to take the managerial vacancy.

The 48-year-old was at Rovers between 1989 and 1991 and said that he was so devastated about not being offered a professional contract, that he cried in the car park afterwards. Is there unfinished business for Ainsworth at his hometown club?

Ainsworth has only ever had one full-time managerial role in football, having taken charge of Wycombe in September 2012, managing the Chairboys 510 times, earning promotion from League Two back in the 2017/18 season, as well as winning the League One play-offs in 2019/20.

Wycombe will be partaking in League One’s play-offs this season, having sneaked in on the final day of the season at the expense of Plymouth Argyle, giving Ainsworth a second opportunity to see his men play in the Championship for the second time in their history.

The 48-year-old who won LMA League Two Manager of the Year in the 2014/15 season is priced at 5/2 for a return to Blackburn.

Former Birmingham City and Blackburn midfielder Damien Johnson is also on this list of candidates to become Rovers’ next permanent manager.

The 43-year-old made 60 league appearances for the Ewood Park club between 1997 and 2002 before leaving for St Andrews’ and is currently Blackburn’s Professional Development Phase Lead Coach, which effectively sees the Northern Irishman lead their Under 23s team, having worked his way up the ranks from being an Under 14s coach.

Johnson is priced at 5/1 to step up into the senior managerial role at Ewood Park.

Michael Appleton is also rumoured to be interested in the Blackburn job following his recent departure from Lincoln City.

The 46-year-old has had previous managerial experiences at the likes of Portsmouth and Blackpool in turbulent situations for both clubs, as well as at Ewood Park between January and March of 2013 where he oversaw 15 games in charge, winning just four of them.

Since then, Appleton has had a decent career, managing to win 78 of 173 matches in charge of Oxford United in a three-year spell between July 2014 till June 2017, where he managed to earn promotion to League One in his second season at the club.

After this spell at Oxford, Appleton joined Premier League outfit Leicester City to be Craig Shakespeare’s assistant manager, before the latter was sacked, meaning that he had two games as caretaker manager of the Foxes, of which they won both. Appleton would then join West Brom having started his coaching career there as well as the latter years of his playing career.

Appleton’s last managerial job was at Sincil Bank with Lincoln, winning 55 of his 143 matches, following a difficult third season in charge. The 46-year-old will feel as though things could have gone much differently, having lead them to the play-off final in the 2020/21 campaign, where his side were beaten by Blackpool at Wembley.

Appleton is priced at 8/1 for a return to Blackburn.

Legendary Blackburn winger Jason Wilcox is another that has been linked with the vacancy at Ewood Park.

The 51-year-old is currently Manchester City’s Academy Director, but, made 271 league appearances for the club between 1989 and 1999, playing a part in their famous Premier League title-winning side of 1994/95.

Wilcox initially joined City’s academy coaching team back in 2012 before stepping up to be their Under 18s manager, overseeing a national championship title, as well as two FA Youth cup finals. He has been the Cityzens’ Academy Director since 2017.

Wilcox is priced at 12/1 to Blackburn’s next permanent manager after Mowbray.
