The 2019/20 Premier League season is just around the corner, and as well as predicting who will win it and who will be relegated plenty will also be picking who they think will finish as the top scorer.
Last season the golden boot was shared between three players, with each of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all finishing on 22 league goals.
But none of those three players are the favourite with bookmakers to finish up as top goalscorer in the 2019/20 season. Instead it is Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane who is the shortest odds to score more than anyone else in the Premier League next season with Sky Bet pricing him at 4/1.
The England international is a fair favourite, given just how prolific he has been since breaking into the Spurs first team a few years ago. Indeed he has scored 125 goals in just 178 top flight appearances for the Londoners, netting 20 or more in four of his last five seasons.
He is also a two time golden boot winner, finishing as top scorer in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons. Had he not missed 10 league games through injury last season he could have won it again too, having still managed to score 17 times in just 28 appearances.
Kane is first choice at Tottenham, when he is fit he plays. Therefore if you back him you don't have to worry about him being left out of the starting line-up, and when you take his goalscoring record into account he could be worth backing this season.
Salah, Aguero and Aubameyang all amongst favourites to finish as top scorer
Two of the three players who shared last seasons golden boot are then considered the most likely challengers to Kane, along with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
Salah is currently the second favourite to finish as top scorer, with Sky Bet offering odds of 5/1 for the Egyptian to outscore his rivals. He has actually won the award in each of the last two seasons, netting 32 goals two years ago to finish as the sole leading goalscorer before sharing it last season so is certainly a contender and could be worth a punt.
Manchester City's Aguero comes next with odds of 6/1, quite a generous price for the prolific Argentinian. The 31-year-old has bagged 164 Premier League goals in 239 appearances for City, and in six of his eight years in England has hit 20+. However despite scoring so many goals he has still only managed to finish as top scorer in one season, and with Gabriel Jesus also in the squad Aguero may not get as much game time as some of his rivals.
Just behind is Aubameyang, who can be backed at 7/1 to bag the most. The Arsenal frontman enjoyed a strong first full season in the Premier League and as already mentioned finished as the joint leading goalscorer with 22. He formed an excellent partnership with Alexandre Lacazette and despite the Gunners struggling defensively, they are always a force going forward. He should be up there once again this year.
Other potential top scorer odds worth looking at
After the top four favourites the odds start to lengthen significantly, and there are a few players who's high price may convince you to have a punt on them.
As mentioned, Mane finished as the joint top scorer last season but he is out at 12/1 to repeat the feat in the upcoming campaign. His odds are slightly longer than the other two players who netted 22 goals last season possibly because it was the first time in his career that he managed to score more than 20 times in the league.
Jamie Vardy is out at 25/1 to win the golden boot, but given his consistency in recent years that seems like quite big odds. The former England international has scored 75 Premier League goals in the last four seasons for Leicester City, including 18 last season meaning he was just five of the pace. Most of those goals game in the last few months of the season too after Brendan Rodgers arrived and implemented a more attacking approach. Could he better his tally with a full season under the former Liverpool boss?
Perhaps the most surprising price given is the 66/1 odds on offer for Son Heung-min to finish as top scorer. The Spurs forward enjoyed a fantastic campaign last year, bagging 20 goals in all competitions and winning the club's Player of the Season award despite playing in three international tournaments through the year.
The South Korean has had a full summer to rest and recuperate, and with Mauricio Pochettino now playing him as a central striker rather than out wide he could score even more goals next season. We find it baffling that he is given such a high price, especially considering that Romelu Lukaku is a far shorter price at 28/1 despite struggling last season and having been linked with a move away from Manchester United.
Son Heung-min is 66/1 to win the golden boot.
