Odds released for Sheffield Wednesday’s 2019/20 Championship season

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday Championship odds for next season released

It has been a strange campaign for Sheffield Wednesday, which has seen two contrasting halves. They began the season under the management of Jos Luhukay, who had taken over from Carlos Cavalhal midway through the 17/18 season.

The Dutchman was in charge of the Owls during a turbulent time, with a transfer embargo in place throughout the majority of the summer transfer window. He then struggled for results and questionably left out key members of his squad including Kieran Westwood and Sam Hutchinson, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

He was sacked in December after a defeat against Swansea left them in 18th place and just six points above the relegation zone. Steve Bruce was brought in to replace him and since then he has turned the South Yorkshire club around.

Having taken charge of 16 games he has won seven and drawn seven, losing just two and has taken the Owls from 18th to ninth. They even have a slight chance of reaching the play-offs, although it would take a bonkers set of results for that to come to fruition.

So with them looking likely to be involved in the Championship for the 2019/20 season, bookmakers have already released odds for how they will do. We have taken a look at the odds to see what type of season Sheffield Wednesday are set to have according to them.

What odds are Sheffield Wednesday to be promoted to the Premier League?

Given how well Bruce has done with Sheffield Wednesday since taking over, plenty of fans will be hopeful that they can take their form into next season and challenge for promotion.

It is certainly not an unrealistic ambition. The Owls have some real quality within their squad as proven with their run of results in recent weeks. They also made the play-offs in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons with plenty of their current players part of those teams, so the experience is there.

A lot will depend on the transfer window however, and as things stand it is unclear how they will operate in it. As mentioned above they were under embargo last summer and their owner Dejphon Chansiri admitted that they are in trouble for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

It remains to be seen if they will be punished further at the end of the season, but their next campaign is likely to hinge on that. If they have to balance their books and sell key players such as Fernando Forestieri and Barry Bannan, it will weaken them. They will also lose loanee Michael Hector who has been instrumental in defence, whilst there are still question marks surrounding Kieren Westwood's future with his contract set to expire.

It is therefore perhaps because of the uncertainty that the Owls are not considered one of the favourites to win the Championship next season. Sky Bet have priced them at 16/1 to clinch the title, which is significantly higher than the likes of Fulham and Huddersfield Town.

As for promotion, whether it be finishing first, second or going up via the play-offs, the odds for Sheffield Wednesday are a modest 5/1. Considering that Bruce has won promotion from the second tier a record four times, that could be worth a look.

Could Sheffield Wednesday be relegated?

Given the uncertainty around Sheffield Wednesday and their FFP concerns, there is also a chance that the 2019/20 season could go badly for them too.

If they do lose key players and fail to replace them adequately, then they may begin to struggle and find themselves at the wrong end of the Championship table.

That said, the bookmakers odds seem to indicate that they do not believe that the Owls will be relegated next season. Indeed they are a fairly long price at 12/1 with Sky Bet, with the likes of Brentford and Blackburn Rovers currently considered more likely relegation candidates.

With Bruce at the helm you wouldn't fancy them to struggle too much. He has never suffered relegation from the Championship in his career, and based on how he has done with Wednesday so far you wouldn't imagine that stat will change next season. He has made them difficult to beat, which is usually enough to at least stay up.
