Premier League Corner Count Betting Guidebook

Gundogan Salah City Liverpool

City and Liverpool lead the corner count

Predictably Manchester City have won the most corners this season with 199 corners this season, averaging 6.63 for and 2.97 against. This is eight more corners than Liverpool have managed who average 6.59 for and 2.83 against.

This doesn’t come as a surprise due to the attacking styles that both teams have, as they tend to overload the opposition box and use inside forwards, meaning that they do cross the ball a lot, although City’s tend to go down as on the floor cutbacks. Both teams also spend the majority of every match they play camped in the opposition half, as City average 61% possession, whilst Liverpool usually have just two percent less.

Chelsea are the best of the rest

Interestingly Chelsea are third on this list, having managed 179 corners under two different managers. What makes for interesting reading when looking at Chelsea’s statistics, is that they average a high amount in 6.21 per game, but they also average a lot more against the top two in 4.41 against per game.

Under former PSG manager Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea now play a 3-4-3 which tends to push teams further out wide, due to the sheer number of bodies in the middle of the pitch.

Leeds' back and forth style seems to rake in the corners

Leeds' constant flow of attacking intent has resulted in goals galore across their Premier League return. In fact, Leeds are the only team inside the top 11 with a minus goal difference, as they have let in a staggering 47 goals, but scored 45 of their own. With the back and forth and consistent probability of goals in their fixtures, they sit fourth on the list for most corners in a game, averaging 5.97 corners themselves per match, whilst conceding 5.55 each game too - the Whites are the only team inside the top 10 on the most corners list from the bottom half of the table along with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton and Aston Villa’s attacking styles are earning them plenty of chances from corners

Aston Villa and Brighton are sixth and seventh when it comes to shots on target per game in the Premier League, with the Villains averaging 13.7 shots, scoring 39, whilst the Seagulls average 12.9 efforts on goal and have found the back of the net 32 times.

This has more or less equated to a similar amount of corners in relation to their shot to goal ratios, as Brighton have had 170 corners compared to Villa’s 163, with Graham Potter’s side averaging 5.86 per game, whilst Villa average 5.82.

Arsenal, Leicester, Wolves and United are the last of the 150 plus club

Arsenal, Leicester, Wolves and Manchester United are the last four clubs in the top ten in the Premier League for corners.

The first three teams mentioned makes sense as they are eighth, ninth and 11th in terms of most shots averaged per game in the Premier League. The Gunners have managed 152 corners in 29 matches which is an average of 5.28 per game, the exact same amount Leicester and Wolves.

United is a slightly more puzzling one, as they are joint fourth with Leeds on the shot count, with 13.9 per game. However, United have got the second-most goals in the Premier League with 56 which obviously reduces chances of winning corners. Their dip in form attacking wise since January onwards may have hampered their corner statistics, following a fairly average goalscoring spell that has seen the Red Devils score 16 goals in 13 league matches if you exclude their 9-0 hammering of Southampton on 2nd February.

This sees Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side average 5.17 corners per game, which puts them two shy of the other three teams mentioned above.

Wilder’s Wingmen

Although Chris Wilder has recently departed Bramall Lane, Paul Heckingbottom has only taken charge of one Premier League match this season which was their recent 5-0 humiliation against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Sheffield United are an anomaly in this list, as they have had the 11th most corners with 131 (4.55 per game), despite averaging 8.4 shots per game. This is mainly due to their playstyle which generally lacks creativity in terms of the eye of the needle passes. The Blades are direct and use underlapping centre-backs down the flanks in order to create more space to work the ball into the opposition box, which is key to their play, as they have attempted 507 crosses into the box this campaign.

West Ham, Fulham and Southampton are all evenly matched in this statistic.

West Ham are 10th on the average shots per game chart, as well as being 12th for the most corners. The Irons average 12 shots per game and have managed to get 130 corners this campaign (4.52 per game).

Fulham have had 129 corners (4.3 per game) compared to Southampton’s 127 (4.41 per game) which again is relatable to the shots per game statistics, as Fulham average 11.6 shots compared to the Saints 10.3, with Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side scoring 36 goals compared to the Cottager’s 23.

The Defensively-Focused Sides Are Clear To See

Newcastle United, Everton, Tottenham, Burnley, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion all make up the bottom six in that order, which is largely down to their defensive styles.

If you take Tottenham out of the equation on the list of teams above then you also have the order of least shots on goal per game in descending order, as Jose Mourinho’s side are 13th on that statistic averaging 11, scoring 49 goals which is the fourth most in the Premier League, showing that Spurs have the best goal conversion ratio in the division with 11.7% of their shots going in.

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle have had 123, which is four more than Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton, meanwhile, the bottom three in Burnley, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion have had 114, 101 and 101 corners. This is hardly a surprise considering their shot per game stats, as well as the fact that Burnley and Palace average 43% possession, whilst West Brom average 41% which is the lowest amount in the league.
