Reports & Rumours: Who Are Newcastle Going to Sign in January?

Once seen as Manchester United’s next great hope, especially after the club paid over £45m from Monaco, the Frenchmen has found it harder and harder to get game time at Old Trafford. Featuring in just seven games this season and his only goal coming against Everton, Martial will know that to get minutes, he’ll have to leave the Theatre of Dreams.

With representative Philippe Lamboley confirming that Martial wants to leave in January, the rumours started flying in. Whilst Juventus seemed early front runners to bring Martial to Turin, Newcastle now seems a likely option too.

Rumours have circled that Newcastle are willing to pay over £1m a month, meaning a move to the North East might be the perfect opportunity for the former Monaco forward to revitalise his career, however, it would be an almighty step down.

The club are also keeping tabs on Jesse Lingard.

One of the first players to be linked to Newcastle when the takeover was completed in October, Kieran Trippier still seems a prime target for the Toon Army. Playing 16 times in all competitions so far this season, it would surprise you that Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid are willing to let the former Spurs player go, as long as they receive the £15m price tag they feel he’s worth.

Another caveat to this move potentially happening, however, is if Simeone is able to find a replacement for the full-back. With Trippier wanting a return to England and his contract only having 18 months left, this could be the perfect opportunity for Newcastle to buy.

Eddie Howe will be crying out for some defensive reassurance if he wants to keep the Toon in the Premier League, with his side having the worst defence in the league, conceding 41 goals in 18 games so far this season.

This one is an interesting one and has more to do with the board at both Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion. The Athletic have reported that the Seagulls have given permission to Newcastle to speak to the technical director, Dan Ashworth. If Amanda Staveley and co can pull off this move quickly, Ashworth might look to raid his former club in January.

One name which would be a big coup for Newcastle would be Yves Bissouma. Admired by the likes of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, the Malian international would be much needed in solidifying Newcastle’s midfield, helping both in defense and attack. With only two years left on his contract as well, Eddie Howe might be able to capture the midfielder for around his £22 million price tag, a bargain in today’s markets.

In what would arguably be the biggest transfer coup of the window, it’s been reported that Newcastle have shown an interest in former Premier League title winner, Edin Dzeko. Currently playing for Italian Champions Inter, Dzeko has made a great start to his Inter career since moving to the San Siro in the Summer, scoring eight goals in 17 appearances following an exceptional time at Roma.

Whilst this may be seen as a longshot, the Magpies have to aim high if they are to achieve what it is they set out to do: get back amongst Europe's elite. Were Dzeko to join, you’d think he’d be able to form a formidable striking partnership with Callum Wilson, who’s goals could potentially blast Newcastle United to safety.

Despite reports growing, it remains a highly unlikely transfer.
