Football's Statistically Best 11 in 2020 Across Europe

Best XI in Europe on Stats

Goalkeeper: Jan Oblak – Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak kept the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues last season, having kept a staggering 25 in 59 matches in all competitions, with 17 of them coming in La Liga. The Slovenian has been in even better form this season, having kept nine clean sheets so far this season in 13 games, as well not conceding a goal in Slovenia’s five UEFA Nations League matches this season.

Right-Back: Trent Alexander Arnold - Liverpool

Last season Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was key in helping his boyhood side win the Premier League for the first time in their history, as some stern defensive displays by himself and others around him meant that until the league title was confirmed, the Anfield club had only conceded 19 goals in 31 games, only losing once away at Watford on matchday 28 at this point. The 22-year-old is known for being an attacking full-back and provided 15 assists and four goals in 49 matches last season, with two of these goals coming in crucial wins away at Chelsea and Leicester City. So far this season the Liverpool man has provided 4 assists in 16 appearances.

Centre Back: Virgil Van Dijk - Liverpool

Fellow Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk also makes the cut, as he was a stalwart in the Liverpool defence last season as they took the league title back to Anfield for the first time in 30 years. What compliments the Dutchman’s ability is the fact that goalkeeper Alisson managed to keep 16 clean sheets last season in all competitions, which is the ninth most of any shot-stopper from Europe’s top five leagues, even though the former AS Roma man missed 20 games last season due to injuries, suspension and being rotated for cup competitions. Van Dijk also chipped in with give goals and two assists In 50 games, including the opening goal of the game against Manchester United at Anfield in the Reds 3-1 win over their bitter rivals last January.

Centre Back: Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid

Last season Real Madrid won La Liga with one game to spare, having taken 87 points in 38 games, losing just three times, with club captain Sergio Ramos playing a vital part in this, as Los Blancos only conceded 25 goals in the league last season. The 2010 World Cup winner also managed to score 13 goals last season, with 11 of these coming in the league, meaning that the 34-year-old contributed to 16% of Real’s 70 league goals, which is a staggering statistic for a centre back.

Left Back: Andrew Robertson - Liverpool

The final defender also comes from Liverpool’s defence, as alike Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk, Scotland captain Andrew Robertson was influential to the Anfield club winning the Premier League last season. Robertson, alike right-back Alexander-Arnold is known for being an attacking full-back, as the Scotsman managed to score three goals and assist 12 in 49 matches last campaign. This season, the 26-year-old has carried on in the same vein, with one goal and five assists in 21 games so far this season, as well as captaining his country as they qualified for the European Championships which take place this coming summer, having beaten Serbia on penalties in the play-offs.

Central Midfielder: Thomas Muller – Bayern Munich

Germany midfielder Thomas Muller has been in arguably the form of his career, as he helped Bayern Munich to the treble for the second time in the club’s history, scoring 14 goals and assisting 20 in 50 matches, as Bayern went on to win beat Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga title, Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal, as well as PSG in the UEFA Champions League final. Muller has somehow managed to start this season in even better form than last, having already scored nine goals, as well as assisting ten times in 22 games. A notable highlight for Muller this season includes a brace he scored against RB Leipzig in early December.

Central Midfielder: Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation since joining Manchester United last January, as he had been producing incredible statistics in Liga NOS for Sporting Lisbon, with a few question marks over the Portuguese man as to whether he could replicate this type of form in England. Last season the 26-year-old managed to get 20 goal contributions in 22 matches for United, seeing the Red Devils rise from mid-table to eventually finish third in the Premier League. These numbers for the Old Trafford club meant that Fernandes finished the season on 49 goal contributions in 50 matches when combining his statistics from Sporting and United, he also finished as the UEFA Europa League’s top scorer last campaign with eight goals. So far this season the former Udinese man has got 20 goal contributions in 20 matches.

Central Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been regarded by some as the best player in the Premier League due to his excellent performances in recent seasons, but, last season was statistically his best ever season for City, having equalled Thierry Henry’s Premier League assist record, managing his 20th and final league assist against Norwich on the final day of the 2019/20 season. On top of the incredible amount of assists the Belgian midfielder got, he also managed 13 goals in England’s top flight, meaning that the former Wolfsburg man finished on 33 goal contributions in 35 league games. So far this season the 29-year-old has picked up where he left off, already creating 11 goals, as well as scoring two in 16 appearances so far this campaign.

Attacking Midfielder: Lionel Messi - Barcelona

It wouldn’t be the best team statistically without Lionel Messi, would it? The Barcelona forward has already managed ten goals and five assists in all competitions so far this season in what has been a turbulent start for the Catalan club under the management of Ronald Koeman. Messi recently broke Pele’s record of most goals for a single club, having scored his 644th goal for Barcelona against Real Valladolid just before Christmas. Despite the fact that Barca failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2007/08, the Argentine still performed to incredible standards, racking up 58 goal contributions in 44 matches last season.

Striker: Ciro Immobile - Lazio

Ciro Immobile finished as Serie A’s top scorer last season having scored a staggering 36 goals, five more than Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as racking up eight assists for Lazio as they finished in third place. The Italy international managed to get his hands on the Supercoppa Italiana, as Lazio beat Juventus in the final 3-1. So far this season the 30-year-old has scored 13 goals, as well as assisting three in 15 games in all competitions.

Striker: Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich

Robert Lewandowski spearheaded Bayern’s attack on their way to the treble last season, as he found the back on the net 55 times in 47 games and made ten assists, resulting in the Polish striker winning both UEFA and FIFA Men’s Best Player of the Year. So far this season the 32-year-old has scored 20 goals in 18 games in all competitions, meaning that since the start of last season, the former Borussia Dortmund striker has scored 75 goals.
