Tokyo Olympics: Men's High Jump Odds

high jump olympics

Men's High Jump Odds: Mutaz Essa Barshim

Qatar’s greatest ever Olympic athlete, Mutaz Essa Barshim, enters the summer’s Games as the favourite to take gold in the high jump. Barshim is responsible for two of Qatar’s five all-time Olympic Medals when he took bronze in London, and silver in Rio, and if he can upgrade the colour of his medal again in Tokyo, he will become Qatar’s first-ever Olympic champion in any sport.

He is also the most experienced jumper among the top seeds and he has vast experience of winning too and took the gold medal in both 2017 and 2019 World Championships, while finishing in the top two in all of his last five meets.

Barshim was the Asian record holder in this event when he jumped 2.43m in 2014, but he is way down on his personal best this year, with a season’s best of just 2.30m meaning he must improve significantly on that if he has ambitions of getting among the medals.

Barshim is now 10/3 to win gold and 11/10 to take a medal on his home continent.

Men's High Jump Odds: Ilya Ivanyuk

Ilya Ivanyuk is among the big favourites for the high jump thanks to his excellent performances so far this season in preparation for the Olympics. His season’s best of 2.37m is also his personal best and that is just 2cm below the Olympic Record so he is definitely in contention to break that.

Despite being a native of Smolensk, Ivanyuk has never represented Russia at a major meet, instead, he has competed as an Authorised Neutral Athlete in all four of his major tournament appearances since turning pro in 2017. His career highlights so far remain taking bronze at both the 2018 European Championships and 2019 World Championships.

Now under the moniker of the ROC which Russian athletes compete as, the current world number one is 7/2 to take the gold, and 5/4 to medal.

Men's High Jump Odds: Maksim Nedasekau

Eastern European athletes have often been dominant in this event, but Maksim Nedasekau of Belarus will hope to overcome his Russian and Ukrainian neighbours to take a first-ever Olympic medal for his nation in the high jump.

Nedasekau is currently second in the world rankings thanks mainly due to the gold medal he won at the European Indoor Championships in Torun earlier this year with a personal best of 2.37m, bursting onto the scene in his first professional appearance, jumping a huge height.

The Belorussian is young, in form, and invigorated and at 5/4, one of the big favourites to win a medal, while he is also 7/2 to win gold, level with Ivanyuk.

Men's High Jump Odds: JuVaughn Harrison

The USA have pedigree in virtually every track and field event, and the high jump is no exception, but in the case of JuVaughn Harrison, the US team has an athlete who could win gold in two separate events.

Harrison is a complete newcomer who has never featured in a major meet so far in his career, but he is a multi-talented future superstar who is the outright favourite for the long jump as well as being among the fancied bunch in the high jump. He is the first man in history to go both 2.30m in the high jump and 8.40m in the long jump and he won both events in the US trials.

However, having no experience means it is difficult to gauge how he will handle the pressure of a huge competition like the Olympics on his debut but it will be an intriguing watch. High jump is slightly his weaker event, but he has jumped a very impressive 2.36m this year, which is his personal best too.

Harrison is 9/2 to win gold and 11/8 to take a medal back to the States.

Men's High Jump Odds: Mikhail Akimenko

Just like his Russian compatriot Ivanyuk, Mikhail Akimenko has never had the pleasure of representing his nation at a major competition. He is also competing only as a neutral athlete and now for the Russian Olympic Committee in Tokyo, representing the Olympic rings as opposed to the Russian flag.

He won the silver medal at the 2019 Worlds behind Barshim - the meet where he recorded his personal best of 2.35m. Akimenko comes into this with his season-best at the Games being 2.33m, so he will more than likely need to improve on that if he wants to take the gold medal.

Despite that, the competition in this event is looking very tight, so he has a good chance of replicating his podium finish from the Worlds in Doha two years ago.

Akimenko is 9/2 to take gold and 11/8 to win a medal.
