Qatar’s greatest ever Olympic athlete, Mutaz Essa Barshim, enters the summer’s Games as the favourite to take gold in the high jump. Barshim is responsible for two of Qatar’s five all-time Olympic Medals when he took bronze in London, and silver in Rio, and if he can upgrade the colour of his medal again in Tokyo, he will become Qatar’s first-ever Olympic champion in any sport.
He is also the most experienced jumper among the top seeds and he has vast experience of winning too and took the gold medal in both 2017 and 2019 World Championships, while finishing in the top two in all of his last five meets.
Barshim was the Asian record holder in this event when he jumped 2.43m in 2014, but he is way down on his personal best this year, with a season’s best of just 2.30m meaning he must improve significantly on that if he has ambitions of getting among the medals.
Barshim is now 10/3 to win gold and 11/10 to take a medal on his home continent.
