The quick reactions of a former Premier League defender could well have saved the life of Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Romain Salin this weekend.

Salin was knocked unconscious during his efforts to keep out Portimonense’s second goal on Sunday; the French shot-stopper collided with the post and was left laying on his back, completely out for the count.

That’s when Sebastian Coates, formerly of Liverpool and Sunderland rushed to his assistance by quickly grabbing his team-mate’s tongue, ensuring he didn’t swallow and potentially choke on it.

A Sporting Lisbon substitute who was warming up behind the goal also attended to Salin, before the clubs medical team were able to get the situation under control. The 34-year-old was treated on the pitch and then taken to hospital before the game resumed.

Coates contribution to the match did not end there however, as he got his name on the scoresheet with a well taken header two minutes from time. It wasn’t enough to clinch his side a win however, as Portimonense ran out 4-2 winners, lifting them to 13th in the table while leaving Sporting in 5th, four points off 1st place Benfica.

Have a look how the Uruguayan’s actions ensured there wasn’t a tragic end to this incident below:
