First English Manager to win the PL Specials

Since the Premier League’s formation in 1992, not a single English manager has ever won it. Eddie Howe is odds on to be the first of the current crop of top-level English managers.

Since taking the reins at Newcastle from fellow Englishman Steve Bruce, the Geordies have gone from strength to strength. Looking as though they were destined for the drop back in December, to comfortably finishing 12th, 13 points above 18th place Burnley.

Since the infamous Mike Ashley’s sale of Newcastle to the PIF consortium back in January, they are now considered the richest team in World football, and if they are to follow in the tracks of Manchester City who were subject to a similar takeover back in 2008, silverware and domestic trophies will surely be on their way if they invest as expected.

Howe’s Geordie revolution looks set to continue next season, and although many will consider it a little too early to be challenging for domestic titles, their form since his appointment has been nothing short of spectacular, only rivalled by Manchester City and Liverpool since the turn of the year.

There is little doubt that Newcastle will form into one of football's powerhouses with the financial backing they now have at hand, however, given the ruthless nature of modern football, we may see another manager at the helm when the Magpies eventually lift their first Premier League title.

The former Liverpool player and current Aston Villa boss is only one of two managers on the list to actually win a domestic title, and like his counterpart over at Brighton, his odds likely reflect him leaving his role for a larger project.

Gerrard has long been rumoured as a possible replacement for Jurgen Klopp when he eventually leaves his role as Liverpool’s head coach, with many suggesting the Aston Villa gig is purely a warm-up to gain some premier league managerial experience.

Gerrard’s time at Villa has been mixed so far. Since leaving Rangers for the Villa job back in November last year, he has seen his villa side go on some exceptional unbeaten runs as well as streaks of poor form where many have questioned his resolve as a Premier League manager.

His time at Rangers was far from disappointing, however. After guiding them to their first title in 10 years, while not losing a single league game and also preventing huge rivals Celtic from winning their 10th successive title, he will go down as a legend to many Glasgow Rangers fans.

If Gerrard is to replace Klopp in the near and maintain most of the resources the German currently has, with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah, there’s no doubt they will still be challenging for titles. Gerrard's attacking style of play and reliance on the quality of his full-backs going forward is reminiscent of Klopp’s Liverpool, another reason many think the Reds’ legend will be the idyllic replacement when the time comes.

Similar to Gerrard, Potter’s chances of being the first Englishman to lift the Premier League trophy largely relies on him being captured by a bigger club.

His time in charge of Brighton has left him with a number of fans and with links to recent head coach roles such as at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, it's only a matter of time before he jumps ship for greater resources and silverware chances.

Despite a mid-season slump in form, Potter has reformed Brighton to play exciting, possession-based attacking football, something many larger clubs will be aware of, including the likes of Manchester City who will no doubt be aware that Pep Guardiola won’t stick around forever.

Will Potter get the move before Gerrard inevitably takes the reigns at Liverpool? Or Before Eddie Howe’s financially stacked Newcastle take over the Premier League? Only time will tell…

Two seasons ago Lampard would undoubtedly been the favourite on this list. However, now after miraculously avoiding relegation with Everton, he does not have the financial backing combined with the elite level players he once did at Chelsea.

Frank’s time at the helm of Chelsea may have come to an abrupt and disappointing end, however, the current Everton boss is the third youngest manager in the league and is still at the beginning of his managerial journey.

His time at the top could well come again, but equally, despite Everton’s disastrous 2021/2022 season, the season was an anomaly and although they are far from challenging for league titles if their recruitment improves, the owners have proved time and time again they are willing to invest each transfer window.

The current England boss has long been linked with a Premier League return following two impressive international outings with an extensive period of underwhelming results with arguably far better players.

A World Cup semi-final and European Championships final, only losing out on penalties, is certainly an over-achievement in the eyes of many who are so used to greater shortcomings in recent tournaments.

Although unlikely to be leaving post anytime soon, if England are unsuccessful in the World Cup this December, Southgate’s time in charge may come to an end and there will no doubt be interest from domestic clubs if that is the case.

The Manchester United legend has had an unfortunate start to his managerial career. After taking charge of a financially doomed and subsequently points subtracted Derby County, the England all-time leading scorer has the black mark of a relegation on his CV.

However, the improvement in Derby’s form since his emergence as player-manager increased ten-fold, so much so he was linked with the vacant Everton position back in January.

After entering administration, Derby County were stung with a 21 point deduction, which without they would’ve finished an amicable 19th, avoiding relegation in the process.

Rooney’s managerial career is at the very beginning and his few months in charge of Derby are certainly too soon to judge him on, however, given his status in the game, if successful at Derby, the opportunities will certainly be there for him in the future.
