Every single transfer window, there always seems to be that one player that dominates the headlines and gossip, all summer long. This season, that label can be credited to Wilfried Zaha.
The Crystal Palace forward was always destined to be at the centre of some transfer talk, as he is a player that many think belongs to a 'top six' club. On the back of hitting double digits in the Premier League last season, many clubs were initially linked with the Ivorian's signature, predominantly Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.
With just ten days to go until the transfer window shuts though, a move to one of the English 'heavyweights' now seems unlikely. Instead, a surprise club has emerged as the favourites to sign Zaha this summer.
Top six move unlikely
When Manchester United signed Daniel James, their supposed pursuit of Zaha was all but put to bed. Similarly in Tottenham's case, they have also secured different transfer targets and the potential signing of Zaha has been unlikely for the past few weeks. In fact, both clubs have been as high as 20/1 to sign the Ivorian with Sky Bet.
With both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mauricio Pochettino prioritising elsewhere, an opening seemed to emerge for Arsenal to swoop in. Their interest was clearly concrete and transfer bids were submitted by the North London club. Despite falling short of Palace's asking price, Arsenal found themselves as short as 4/7 to sign Zaha just over a week ago. However, as modern-day fans have grown to understand, football is never that simple. From nowhere, reports flew in stating that the North London club had actually agreed a fee with Lille for Nicolas Pepe.
The young Ivorian was another player in hot demand this summer, but was never really linked with a move to Arsenal. Just three days prior to the breaking news, Emery's side were 10/1 to sign Pepe. Regardless of the transfer politics, their big-money agreement with the Lille forward has inevitably ruled them out of a move for Zaha. At 3/1, it would be a dramatic U-turn should the transfer go through.
Zaha to Everton slashed to 1/4
With Arsenal now almost out of the picture altogether, another Premier League club has entered the race to try and sign Zaha. According to Sky Sports News, Everton submitted a bid of £55m for the pacy forward and have since emerged as the favourites to sign him. From 1/1 to now 1/4, it appears that the Ivorian's next destination will be the blue of Merseyside.
Marco Silva's team were clearly outsiders to sign Zaha at the start of the transfer window, but the Toffee's now look well suited to secure their man. They are a club that can arguably be seen as a step up from Crystal Palace, a factor that led Zaha to wanting a move away from Selhurst Park in the first place.
Although the two clubs are still haggling over the transfer fee, it seems that if the tricky forward is to leave his boyhood club, it will be for Everton.
